Ok guys I need some help this one has really got me stumped ! I have a 2002 Fxstbi which lately has given me problems . Bike runs good for about 5 miles or so then the check engine light comes on and it's like it turns one cylinder off . I can twist the throttle a few times and it picks back up and the light goes off . It might go a few more miles or it may do it again . I pulled the codes and got the following .
12 system relay coil high/shorted
14 system relay contacts closed
32 rear cylinder combustion intermittent
24 Et sensor open/high
I failed to notice that I hadn't plugged the Et sensor back up before pulling the codes , so I'm not sure if 24 is a false code ?
The bike has a 124 cu in motor with Hpi yellow band injectors and a pc III USB . I have found no crimped or damaged wires .
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated !!!!
I'll guess that your coil is bad and is cutting out when hot. It will be difficult to replicate, my best advice would be to get one you know works without having to buy it (a friends maybe) for a swap test to see if the problem goes away. I hate electrical problems, they're expensive to trace either replacing parts to see if that is the problem or just by the time involved. Good luck.
Yea electrical problem are a pain , especially when their intermittent ! Thanks for the advice about the coil but I have put a new coil on and still have the same problem . Although the stock one was working fine I have replaced it with a accell super coil . Thanks again !!
Plugs and plug wires in good shape? I had a front cylinder no combustion code when using Accell wires that are supposed to work with the EFI and ECM. Important that both are compatible with the Knock sensors or the ECM will throw codes. Changed to SE wires and the problem went away.
I have wondered about that ? I'm glad to know someone else has had this trouble . Problem started when I put the accell coil on . Took the accell coil back off and replaced it with the stock one , but still had the problem .Im running thundervolt wires bought at the beginning of this season , and the plugs I just replaced just to be sure .
Not saying this is it, BUT...A buddy ofmine had his at the dealer 2 times for a very smilar issue...We were on a trip to lake george, ny and he broke down...McDermotts HD (AWESOME!!!!!) took him in in 15 minutes and fixed it in 1 hour...his regular dealer NEVER checked to see if there were any firmware upgrades for his bike, there were several that had been available for a long time...updates done in minutes and 65 bucks later he's on his way and HAS NEVER HAD A PROBLEM SINCE...My brother and I have had our firmware updates done on our bikes and SEVERAL were available through HD which made our bikes run better...apparently if YOU don't ask them to check and update them, they don't...Looks like you have an aftermarket motor, but might be worth a check. They plug it in and know in seconds...Good luck.
Thanks rodzilla for the info like I said all help is greatly appreciated ! You are correct I do have a custom build . I may be wrong but the firmware upgrade you are talking about would be for the ECM itself . Running the PCIII would eliminate the need for firmware updates I believe . Because of the custom build I also had to have a custom map done on the dyno . But thanks for trying to help !!!
I have a Cobra FI2000 with the 02 sensors on my bike and it works with the stock ECM, so the changes on our bikes did make a positive diff. Might be worth a try for 65 bucks?? Good luck and ride safe.
