Default Shotgun Shock versions - difference?

So, for the softails, there are a number of different versions, depending on year range (different frame, I'd guess).

If, say, someone purchases one for a '00-'06, and then trades that bike in, keeps the SS, and now has a 2007 or newer bike, would the SS be able to be upgraded to work and then reinstalled on the new scoot?

I know I could just PM JD for an answer (and possibly someone else knows), but I figured that someone else other than me might be interested in the answer. It's a hypothetical that came up when discussing mods with a buddy (now a potentially interested consumer).

I believe that on 2006 and older, you may have to drill & tap the mounting holes under your tranny, but on newer years the tapped holes are already there for you. (Used to hold those charcoal canisters on CA and European models)

The holes there are correct size for the 7/16 tap included in kit.
