It is getting worse every day here in New Jersey what with cellphones, people taking Amphetamines for their ADD and turning into crazed Kamakazi drivers and the deer population just for funzies.
I bought a trailer. Will take the bike up to the Adirondacks next year.
Have joined a group of drag racers at Englishtown DragStrip to see what performance feels like in a controlled environment.
Have scheduled a trip to the MotorSports crotch rocket track to see what 120 mph feels like.
I only take the bike on local roads now when I test and tune it. My theory is that the coming season changes to my riding habits should provide even more thrills than ever but reduce greatly my exposure to everything nutty except deer.
See you at Americade. Let's go for some 300 mile day trips up through the mountains. Be safe.
I just posted a new thread this morning titled "I no longer wonder". I hit a deer last night. The bike nearly took no damage but my left leg was not as lucky, thats what hit the deer and took the brunt of it. That thought never even crossed my mind, quit riding that is. In fact, it's a fairly nice day here and I am considering sneaking out on it today for a little ride.
Riding is to much of a big part of my life, it has been for the past 40+ years. I couldn't think of 1 thing that would want to make me hang it up. I can think of no better therapy than riding. No matter how shitty life gets at times it truly clears my head and makes life much more bearable.
In 1981 I sold my bike to buy an engagement ring and stopped riding. Got married and eventually became a State Trooper. Wife worked in the local ER. I investigated many M/C fatals and only recall one being the rider's fault. Jump ahead 30 years... Divorced, retired... and, after 30 years, started riding again. I firmly believe your "time" has already been determined so you may as well enjoy each day. (Damn, if I still had that bike from 1981 I could have saved a fortune...)
Since the day we are born we begin to die. No one knows when and most don't know how but we go on. I choose to ride for the freedom and love of bikes. Yes, it is dangerous but I have been backed over by a car while at work(construction surveyor) and cut my right hand half through with a machete also while at work. The point is when your time is up, it is up. I make every effort to avoid problems and never ride stupidly, there are enough stupid drivers out there. Do I think of crashing, of course i do but I don't dwell on it.
Idiots will talk on phones and text while driving, no matter how many laws are passed and people will continue to die, both on bikes and in cars, because of it.
I was almost taken out last fall by a car, while on the way home on my bike, that went out of control and shot across a divided highway median right in front of me. I barely had time to hit the brakes and miss the fool!
It's crazy out there and all you can do is be aware of what's going on around you. Good luck to all!
This year a work colleague of mine got killed on his FB by a cut off. A close friend of a girl I know got killed going to fast and lost control. Fab's close call on his vicla and myself a few times avoided dum dums....got me spooked by end of summer. I work in the oil construction industry where the safety culture trumps alll...I give thanx to that defencive mindset that I spin into my riding and believe a few times helped me avoid a few run ins by being aware and ready.
A few weeks ago I questioned 'is it worth it?' Even mentioned to the OL that maybe I should sell the bike. She said 'don't you dare...cuz you will end up getting another one day and spend crapload of cash on mods all over again'. She is right:P
Anyways, I am sure there are many out there that thought the same at one point of time for one reason of another...but our passion saved that day.
Ride safe folks.
Safe indeed. Luckily I enjoy riding out in the country. Just have to keep an eye out for deer and critters. That there is a beautiful, unique bike. Keep it and enjoy it.
