Default tapping or knocking

I developed a tap or knock.. more like a knock at odd RPM's.. I can ride it so it doesnt happen.. but at certain rpms like maybe 3000 and 3500 it will knock.. I cannot get it to do it in neutral just sitting still..

Bike has 38 k on it

today I inspected the primary chain adjustment and it was fine and the chain tensioners (cams).. the tensioners looked near new.. and no sign of any metal in that side of the case.. and from what I could see of one cam lobe it looked fine..

so my thought is I need to have a look at the rods..

if I am right that that is the next step, what is the easiest way to gain access..?

Mine makes an odd ratey tat tat just like you say at a certain gear/rpm range and it has 40K on it. Sounds to me like it the rocker arms since mine is up in the heads I personally would not worry about it. You know it's probably has maybe .0002 or so wear in, and it takes very little to hear. At a 100K plus, the connecting rod bearings will probably go first.

I can hear what I think is some slop in my final drive which could be described as a tap or knock. I see it as probably normal wear and tear and not terribly concerned about it yet mine has 31k fwtw.

The transmission is a screaming eagle 6-speed it only has about 15 K on it. I can actually feel it in the floor boards. Can you guys feel it in your floor boards?

You guys ought to hear the motor in my old Evo. From day one, it sounded like hammers on a tin roof between 2200 and 2800 RPM. Eleven years and 93,000 miles later, it still does. No idea why. The first motor was nice and quiet, but this factory remanufactured motor has been so noisy that I'm sometimes scared to ride it.

So.. I have kinda determined that my motor has been cammed.. so I downloaded the V&H's PCIII USB map for a cammed motor.. noticed it used -3 or so retard in the lower throttle range... I copied that into my map and it seems to have reduced this... but Im still analyzing.....

Since you have an '06, and you say you can feel it in the floorboards, I think its time you pull the primary cover off and check the compensator nut. I know you said you checked the primary chain tension and all was good, but the nut will have no bearing on that adjustment. It just makes noise/vibration and WILL chew up your splines on the Stator rotor and on the compensator sprocket shaft. Ask me how I know, and why I run a BDL closed belt drive now....

Appears to be tight... I cant move it at all laterally by hand... I assume it would be very loose if it came loose?

by the way, after riding tonight.. the retarded timing had no effect.. thought it did but was wishful thinking.. it seems to be getting worse... odd noise.. and what I notice now, is if I hold the throttle steady.. as it goes up in rpms it makes the noise and then stops completely after its out of the "sweet spot".. and there are several "sweet spots"... I also have a bad whine sometimes.. and I think maybe I need to play with the primary adjustment to fix that... read some stuff about that.. I think my adjuster is the stock spring type correct?
