I have been reading thru every thread I have found on changing stock 3.15 gear ratio to 3.36/3.37. I want to improve low end acceleration, as my top end is plenty strong. I have the 240 Phatail kit on my bike, and I have had several well known tuning shops tell me I am probably losing some horsepower and torque with the bigger back tire/wheel. I regeared a four cylinder Jeep with bigger tires years ago, and saw the difference gears can make in putting power to the ground. That Jeep ran faster than many inline six Jeeps I had ridden. Higher rpm's at highway speed does not worry me, as unlike a lot 88b owners, I don't notice engine vibrating more at high speed/ rpm - in 5th gear, my bike seems to smooth out at 75 - 80 mph.
Anyways, here is my question for those more technical than me. I am looking to swap tranny front pulley to 30t, maybe even 29t if I can find good price on a longer belt. Because I have the Phatail kit, I am wondering if the front pulley I currently have is a custom/extended version to make clearance for wider wheel? The Phatail kit states it provides the following: extended mainshaft, front motor sprocket & final drive gear. I have heard some people refer to the front 32 tooth tranny pulley as the final drive - is the 32 tooth pulley and final drive gear the same part? If so, my plans are not going to work out. Thanks for any help. I bought bike with kit already installed by previous owner and did not see what came with kit or was involved in a any part of install. I have a call in to Performance Machine, but have not heard back yet. Here is link to PM site:
I think I found the answer to my question. It looks like the tranny front pulley fits onto the final drive gear. The Phatail kit has an extended drive gear and uses a spacer to push the stock tranny pulley out and gain clearance for wider swingarm. Looks like I should be able to regear using the 30 or 29 tooth pulley.
Anyone here ever install the 29T pulley - curious what you thought about the ride? I will most likely do 30T, and hopefully not have to replace belt.
