Default Installing derby cover...

Hey again, folks...lots of questions coming your way, as I'm about to actually get the new Fatty into the garage this weekend. Lots of shiny stuff in box, sitting in my basement, waiting to be bolted on. Most are pretty straight forward looking, but the derby cover has me suspecting a large pool of fluids will end up on my garage floor, if I take the original one off, and bolt on the skull logo one I've purchased. Am I correct? Any tricks to minimize fluid loss? (ie. leaning bike over to one side while doing the removal/installation...) Also, should I have a replacement gasket on hand? (My bike is "new to me", but has less than 3500 kms on it...can't figure gaskets are in too rough a shape...) Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks...

Keep the bike almost vertical and if the fluid level is correct there should be no fluid loss...Mark...

If you don't have one yet, GET A MANUAL!

Have someone sit on it to keep it straight up or CAREFULLY use a bike jack. Unbolt old cover, new gasket, new cover, replace bolts, TORQUE PROPERY... ride like the wind!

(Manual not needed for this job EXCEPT to get torque spec)

[align=left]I have had mine off a few times while on the jiffy stand, with no spillage. I have not replaced the gasket yet either.

The grease level should be below the opening of the Derby hole with it on the side-stand. I use one of the cheap Sears lifts which keeps the bike level so the grease stays about a half inch below the hole when the cover's off.

When you put it back on remember this; everyone overtightens small bolts and undertightens large bolts - use a torque wrench.

I replaced mine with it on the Jiffy stand and didn't spill even a drop.

Thanks for the tips. And I do have a shop manual...one of the first things I grab with the purchase of every new bike. Sounds a lot easier than I expected...and also gives me a viable excuse to buy a new tool!!! Win/Win. Excellent!!

Dave,

Tell me more about the clamp that is holding your front brake line to the fork tube.

This is the guy right here:

I only have about 50 miles on it, but it appears to be working pretty good so far.
