I removed my baffles on my se IIslip-ons, and now I have a terrible backfire everytime i shift. I am wondering if i can adjust something to make it sound a little better? I like it louder, but i don't want to wreck something. should i put them back on, or live with the backfiring?
When you purchased the SEs, did you get the download, SERT orPCIII? Stock tuning will cause backfiring as there is no back pressure without the baffles. If you did not purchase any of the above then I suggest doing so as it will eliminate almost all backfiring. Another reason you didn't have it prior to removing the baffles is the baffles tend to muffle it to the point of almost inaudible.
I know this as a result of purchasing the SEs, A/Cand download. Removed the baffles from the SEs with minimal backfiring. I also purchased the Rush SOs and can hear some BFing under deceleration but it is minimal and I can live with it.
Hope this helps,
Check the clamps between your pipes and the SE slippons . I mentioned popping to the tech when new and they tightened them up , supposedly . A month or two later I put on my V&H Pro-Pipe , I loosened the mounting bolts to the frame and not the clamps . I pulled the mufflers off , theywere loose as could be , could have fell off !
Your AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) has changed due to the lack of back pressure (free flowing pipes). You will have to have your bike rejetted (carb) or if you are EFI you will need a different download, PCIII or SERT to adjust your AFR.
i know of a couple of guys who have put an eyebolt where the screw that holds the old baffles in. and it works pretty well to give it a little back pressure...db
The 2 main problems that cause backfiring are bad mixture and air leaking into the exhaust system. SInce you have been working on the pipes, you mihgt have both problems.
i am installing V&H big radius pipes with baffles w/ PCIII, if i remove the baffles will i have the same problem? Or can I just select a different map for the bike if it does occure?
You can install and download a PC III the right map for your bike and its accessories in less than 20 mins with a computer. Easy as anything. Will take care of all AFR issues you have, you can run with or without baffles then also.
