Hey guys, I wanted to reach out and ask about a deal I'm working on with a local. I've been riding bikes forever and just got rid of my 2006 Street Rod. It was a great bike, but I want something a little bit bigger. I sold the 'rod a little bit ago and now I'm looking for a new bike before winter is over (since prices in my area are way lower right now than during spring). I've worked out a deal on a 2002 Heritage Softail with 17K miles for $8200. What are your thoughts? Bike has a bunch of extras including Vance and Hines pipes, windshield, upgraded headlights, etc. What are your thoughts? I imagine this bike would get done up in my style (much like my vrscr) but it seems like a REALLY good base. Let me know what you think!
My biggest concern is the year. 12 years old seems a little old. That said, if it's a good deal, I can overlook the year. I've checked NADA and KBB and it seems about average value. If I can get something newer for around the same price, then I can wait... but seems around here the best I can do is a couple years newer for about 2K+ more.

Year is pretty unimportant when buying used Harley's. It's all about how it was taken are of... and what you want that changed from year to year.
That's a good price... definitely not a "steal"... but if you like it, buy it.

Thanks for the info. Any idea on the depreciation for a bike like this over the course of the next few years? I know how I am and I normally ride a bike for a couple years and then get something different. Will I lose much? Obviously bikes aren't an "investment" but I've done pretty well so far...
plan on keeping it. It will depreciate at a pretty high pace. if you traded it now...dealer would offer 3-4 k tops...accessories get you nothing on trade and even private sales usually. One thing to consider is how soon you will need to chnage cam tensionor shoes or upgrade to hydro or gear drives cam...replacing stock shoes are the cheapest...I was going to trade my '04 FXSTI which looks like a FB now but I have more into it than my trade in so its not worth it even though its paid for...

Thanks for the advice. I've been looking at changing the tensioners and it doesn't seem too hairy or expensive. That said, I'm kind of talking myself out of the deal. It doesn't sound like it's sweet enough for the year and I'm definitely not looking to take a 4K+ loss on it.
Doesnt seem outrageous. Ive found time of year and location make a HUGE difference. I had been looking for a Heritage for a while now. Waited, waited, just picked up a 2000 with some extras on it as well for 5500 has right at 20k miles on it. Good deals are out there if you're patient. I also lucked out and bought it in the middle of a snow storm at which point the owner was probably not thinking about how nice it will be in a few months, haha.
Any thoughts on a 2005 night train at $8000? You're right, buying in the winter is always best. That said, I'm on the west coast where there's plenty of good weather and the motorcycle prices show it.
I had a 2002 Night train with similar miles that I bought for about that price. If you can get the Heritage for those dollars, it is a good deal.
P.S. you will love the Heritage, it is a great bike.
