I had a RK from 2001-2006 and loved it. Got my first softail a Deluxe in 07 and my current Heritage in 10. I don't think I will ever go back to a touring just because I am so much more comfortable on a Softail.
I have both also, each has it's great qualities. Have done long trips on the Heritage but way more comfy on the Street glide. Wife rides a Dyna so we don't go two up. I just can't give up my Heritage. I love the classic style.
My first Harley was the Fatboy Lo and I must say,I do miss that bike.Picked up a brand new SG about 7 months ago and although I like the cool looks and comfort of the bagger,You just can't beat the handling of the softail and till now I still think the Fatboy is the ultimate picture of a Harley but then again that's just me.Wish I could afford to have them both...ah well.
I have had 6 Harleys in the past 25 years, 3 of them Softails. I've owned a couple of Touring models and have to agree that each line serves a purpose, but I keep going back to a softie. Most passengers like the big touring seats, so I can understand if you have an OL, you have to make her happy, I guess. I ride solo & go on one or two long trips a year where I might put on 500-600 miles per day for several days, but most of my riding is 300 miles a day, or less, on a weekend day. The Fat Boy works for me just fine, and IMO, like any Softail, it just looks great. :-)
....so get a cycle visions kit and put hard bags on the Softail. I have both and like both for different reasons, but if I could only have one the Softail suits me just fine.
Attached a pic of my Heritage with Hard bags. The bags remove in seconds, the entire kit in about 20 mins. Bought it originally cause I didn't want a bagger but after 7 years, I can count on one hand the number of times I removed them. I like the look and the bags are just too convenient.
I love my Softail. Around town it rides and handles like a dream. I also would hop on rt 80 here and go from coast to coast on this bike the way I have it set up and not worry about a thing too. You can turn a Softail into a touring bike but you can never turn a touring bike into a Softail.
Just the opposite for me. Had a 03 FXST and then went to Road King, no regrets here. The Road King works great for me around town or on the highway, pretty versatile for a big touring bike IMO.
