Short of replacing the heat shield you are probably out of luck.
You can replace it or have it rechromed. Both of which will probably cost about the same. Took my bike to thedealer to get a new tire put on and the mechanic let my phantom cover hang against the pipe scratching the crap out of it. It didn't bother me too much because thescratchesmy wife did to it with her heels is much worse.I'm getting ready to install a new big bore kit and Fatcat anyway so, no biggie to me.
Dis sort of the same thing last weekend , got a synthetic polishing rag to wipe something of my hot exhaust , what a mess . Hopefully you did not scratch it , no cure for that . I got my bike as hot as it gets and wiped the burnt mess off with a COTTON rag and when cool hit it over with some Mothers Chrome Polish , looks as good as before . If you get that heat shield rechromed it most likely won't match . Best idea if you need to go that route is a new shield or rechrome both shields .
thanks everyone for the replies, and I have to say somehow this thread, got pretty funny for a while!!lol..lol.. I got a price from v@h $85.00 for new shield convert that to can plus shipping? it's is an option. I'll have another couple of go's with the polish and never dull first.
The best thing to do (even though it dont sound good) is to take a blade from a utility knife and scrape the thick off (without touching the pipe with it). Then use oven cleaner with a LOT of rubbing. It does work without scratching. Thats how i shoe rubber off of my pipes.
