I agree with most. For a bike sitting that long, there's alot to consider. It does look like a cool project bike though. If your gut says no, walk away.
Yeah, I passed on that bike and am going to look at a 1992 Springer. I started anew thread titled 1992 HD softail springer. Check out the pics.
he wants 6200, but NADA shows 6K in good condition.
Good. It's not hard to dump another 5K into a bike. For 10K, there's a lot of nice Harleys that would be great for you without out all the hassle of making it work for you.
I'd take on that project to have something to tinker with in my spare time....
That's about all that bike is good for. Needs a boatload of work, and the TMU will send
alot of people running. My bike's got 16,547 original miles. Wouldn't have bought it if it was TMU. Knowing the mileage at least give a touch off the history of the bike. And the fact that my original paint, chrome, and fluids were in good shape tells me that some care was taken with my bike. I enjoy doing all of my own work on the bike.
That's my meditation time...
I had passed on this one back in March and I now see it listed again on CL for $500 less than before (was 5k now 4.5k). I haven't replaced my Dyna yet so am searching again, as I'm jonesing for another ride.
I know this bike, and will look at it again on Sunday. Apparently the owner has had it serviced and has receipts. He's cleaned up the surface rust on the chrome and although it's true mileage unknown (TMU), he has an invoice showing the mileage when he replaced the old speedo. It was done at 26k miles and has 12k miles on it now, so a total of 38,000 miles for a 1987. That's an average of 1400 miles per year for a 27 year old bike.
I'll make an offer of 3500 and hope he understands that it's a fair price for it's condition. I won't go more than 4k. I need something to tinker with, and the price is right if it runs well. I hope that old EVO doesn't jar me to the bone!

Pretty much most any 87 will be TMU...those bikes ate speedos for lunch....mine is on it's third(that I know about). If it runs good and you can get it for 4k or less you will be fine.
