Default Switching to FULL SYN ?

Hi all ! OK, here goes.I have an 05' Fatboy and had the HD SYN3 put in at the 5,000 service (only did this service because i bought the bike used last year and it has an extended warranty and i wanted the service manual signed by dealer for future refference should anything happen.) I'm thinking about going with the Amzoil 20 w 50 in the motor, but i've read that some people are using 20w40 or lighter in the primary and some use 20 w 50 in all holes and some use the Amzoil Severe Gear in the tranny. My question i guess has several parts as you can start to see. I was at Amzoils website and they have several weights of Severe Gear Lube (75w90 / 75w110 / 75w140) now a lot of peeps are running Redline Shockproof 75w190....is the heavier the better and should i go with the Amzoil Severe Gear 75w90 / 110 or the 140 ? Should i run lighter in the primary or stick with the 20w50 ? Is 20w50 in all 3 holes the way to go ? I do know one thing......with the Syn 3 that top end engine noise (sounds like a little valve clatter going on) drives me crazy and it just sounds even noisier with the windshield mounted ! Any replies will be appreciated.....enjoy the upcomming summer and be safe out there !

If you browse through the "Oil And Oil Related Topics" in the General Tech Forum you will find an almost endless selection of threads dealing with oil related questions.

That being said, I sometimes think that bike owners worry and stress way too much about the fluids used in their bikes.

If you change your fluids (and filters) on a regular basic almost anything will give you excellent results.

I myself ride year round, and live in an area with extreme temperature changes (sub zero temps in the winter to 105+ temps in the summer), and I like running synthetic fluids.

Mobil 1 and Amsoil both make good products, and I have used both. I normally use Mobil 1 in all my Harley's as it is available locally, and I don't need to 'special order' their products.

I like to keep it simple, and myself and most of the guys I ride with run Mobil 1 20W-50 V-Twin in the engine and primary, and Mobil 1 75W-90 Gear Lubricant in the transmission.

But then again, I can't recall the last time I heard of anyone having any oil related problems, no matter what they were running, and this includes folks with over 100K miles on their bikes.

Iuse Amsoil in all 3 holes , 20w-50 in the motor , 10w-40 in the primary , Severe gear 75w-90 in the trans. Ihave done this since 7 miles on the clock . The motor is much quieter than my buddies Deluxe who is running Syn 3 in all 3 holes , so much so that he switched over to Amsoil . As for running Shock Proof Heavy in the trans , I tried it and it seems to shift better with the Severe Gear .

Thanks for the info. Like i mentioned above i have an 05' Fatboy with aprox 7500 miles on it and at the 5000 they put syn 3 in all 3 holes and i don't care much for the clatter on the motor and think i'll go with the Mobil 1 VTwin 20w50 in the engine and primary and the Mobil 1 75w90 Gear Lube in the tranny. Theres a guy where i work that sell Amsoil on the side and it runs 9.30 qt. and i can pick up the Mobil 1 Vtwin at Wal-marts or Autozone (a little cheaper at wally world but i'll get it at Autozone instead...hate wally / china world) for 7.95 qt. I was also asking about the tranny lubes because the Redline's like 95 / 140 and at Autozone they have 2 weights of Mobil 1 Gear Lube (75/90 and when i called the store earlier the girl said they also stocked 90/140) and was wondering if i should go with the heavier weight ?

I am not a believer in syn oil in my engine. I use regular 20-50 and change it more often than most I change my engine oil every thousand miles and my tranny and primary at 1500 mile. I average about 4000 miles a year as much as my free time will allow that's four oil changes and two tranny and primary. Total cost of about $150.00 if that. I feel that the maintenance schedule that a manufacture puts on there products is to have that item last an amount of time that they have in mind like a car they figure five years I had my Toyota 4runner 17 years. I believe that changing the oil in a motor vehicle is the cheapest maintenance there is and one of the most important With the amount of money most bikers spend on there rides for accessories this is nothing. I have heard tails about syn oil and I will stick with the stuff that has been in use for about 100 years.
