I have owned both a 2012 Street Glide and a 2012 Fatboy.
And although the Street Glide was smoother at highway speeds. I still find I prefer riding the Fatboy. If you are taking short day trips and not taking several day long trips the Softail my just fit the bill.
Really? I could tell you stories of compensators going out, counter balances cracking and now, slowing down at 1600rpm and cruising at 50-60mph, my mirrors are useless. It's back to the shop AGAIN.
Just throwing my 2 cents in here....I had a 11 Heritage Classic. That bike ran so good! I was using it to go back and forth to work (40 miles one way) on freeway and bad city roads. It took the potholes and the freeway. Only did one long 2k mile ride and it felt good on that ride...very smooth. I know bikes are all different but the guys at the plant must have been having a good day when they made that one...never a leak, never a problem!
In the 9 years I only owned the Heritage, I never had a vibration issue. I took many long trips, and loved the bike enough that I kept it, along with the new bagger.
However, now that I've put many miles on the bagger, I have become aware of the buzzing (high frequency vibration) when I take the Heritage for a spin. I feel it in the handgrips about 65ish to 70ish. Not terrible, not a deal breaker, didn't notice it until I rode the bagger, but it IS there....

FWIW....
This is true with older model softails but having owned and ridden tourers (09 RKC AND 11 ultra limited) for five years I can say with certainty that the newer softails with the 103 engine and 6 speed trans doesn't buzz at high speeds at all. It is a super smooth ride for those that do not enjoy the shake like me.
