Default 2003 softail clutch or trans. problem? PLEASE HELP!

on my 2003 softail im hearing a clanking noise shifting into first gear also a whining noise coming from the left side of the bike and cant shift into neutrual while the bike is running,does anyone know what the problem is,any help would be greatly apreciated.

Chain need to be tightened/replaced? Compensator come loose? Those would be my guesses of where to look first.
