Default Sound from rear tire.

Hey everyone,

I need a little guidance and help. I purchased a new 2013 softail last year and shortly after I purchased it a squeaking / humming is coming from the rear of the bike after about 15 miles of riding. Its not the belt because I had the dealership take a look at it they just cant seem to find anything else wrong. I'm not sure where else to look for a solution.

I spend a good amount on this bike and I feel like it should not be doing this. Can anyone help and point me in the right direction of what they think it could be.

Brakes heating up and brushing the rotor. Bearings are another idea.

Bearing would be good guess. You say after 15 minutes of riding that would give them time to heat up. Plus Harley has reputation for bad bearings.

Make sure it is not your bearings...I had two bearing failures in 13k on a new bike...second failure did 1200 bucks damage and almost made me go boom at 65 mph...do a search, happening a lot...

Thanks for the input guys. How would I go about testing the wheeling bearing? Or do I have to resort to the dealership for that?

Take it back to dealer and tell them to ride it and then run it up on a lift that leaves rear wheel free so they can have the rear wheel spinning to get a idea of where the noise is coming from. They could use a heat probe to see which side is getting hotter then normal. You could do the above but they should be doing this.

Sometimes a bearing will heat up enough in a few miles to make noise as stated but often if you go a few miles ,stop and feel the parts of the hub or rotors it'll feel very hot as well. Just don't burn your hand if it is scorching. Heat could be an indicator in either case bearings or brakes.

It may be actually cheaper to have the bearings changed out. A new set of Timken or All ***** QUALITY bearings cost about 25 bucks for a whole set!!!!! Costs about 20 bucks to have them installed per wheel. CHANGE THEM, cheap life insurance...
Do a search...the factory ones are not good, poorly manufactured and have very little grease, even when new. A hd mechanic showed me brand new ones in the box WITH RUST ON THEM and then installed them in someones bike...
Do it and then don't worry about it...ride safe.
Ps I have my NH place up in Warren...sweet! I grew up in Gilford, but way too many condos for me there now...You going to Laconia? I'll be up 10 days...pending rain clouds LOL...

Hey Rodzilla6

I hope to hit Laconia this summer given the weather as well. Where did you purchase the bearings and did you have them installed by the guys at your dealership?

Thanks for your input.

Which model do you have? If you have a Fatboy with the 200mm rear tire this thread may be of some relevance.
