I got just over 10K on the stock Dunlop D401 on the rear and 17K on the front.
With that kind of performance I can't think of a reason to put anything else on.
When you say "best" what are you looking for, high mileage or good grip?
I just put Commander II's on my softail and the road handling is a lot better the the Dunlops that were stock. Being new I can't give you any idea about mileage.
Stock Dunlop got about 8000 miles. Been runnin Dunlop Roadsmart Radials for a few years now. Only get ~6k miles but I dont care. The ride, handling, grip, wet traction is far superior adding to the fun and safety factor.
not a Heritage, but I got 9k out of the stock dunlop (200/55/R17 rear) and there was still tread left on it, but it was pretty worn down. I'm running a Commander II now both front and rear (got them both from RevZilla for like $275 shipped) and have about 500 miles on it, and am liking it quite a bit. not enough time on it to say whether it's amazing or not.

What do you do ride the interstate all day?
I could tell my rear dunflop was starting to lose traction at 4,000. Itll be done by the time i get back from laconia.
I run metzler marathon. Put on new when I bought the heritage last year. Can't give you a mileage but they got good reviews online and several run them here I think.
