Hello from Tupper Lake, NY! I'm new in the forum...thought I'd give it a try! I bought a 05 night train last fall ( which I haven't rode yet!...well only 80 miles..lol ) and purchased a PM drive side brake phat tail kit for it over the winter. I bought a yaffe wheel and my 240 for the back as well. PM wants you to buy everything PM and says that nothing else will work of course. I understand that I need a PM drive side brake caliper at the tune of 700 bones..lol...and plan to purchase it in the next couple weeks. I contacted a performance shop reguarding the wheel and he said it was just a spacing issue....you don't need a PM wheel, most anything will work, he claimed. The question I have for anyone that has any experience with these kits is this:
Can I use any of my stock components such as my rotor, pulley and belt? I like to save a couple bucks if possible. Thanks for any input guys!
I believe the PM utilizes your stock belt. Unless there is some proprietary hub that won't line up, I would think that you could use your pulley and rotor. You can download the installation instructions for the Phatail kit from the PM website. It walks you through every step of the install. That might give you some hints on what you can and can't use. Good luck.
..need different belt, rotor and sprocket...shame you didn't see my add..I'm selling a complete Phatail kit with PM wheel, tire, rotor, driveside brake and sprocket..$4500.
Later
..narrow belt, different front sprocket, 11.5 rotor..spacing issues for driveside brake with rotor and sprocket.. I believe wheel has different offset.. it seems to me that you should be able to overcome some of these issues with correct wheel spacing..
Later
i put the driveside brake phatail kit on my deuce...kept the original belt...but wouldn't recommend anything but a PM wheel androtordesigned for the phatail driveside kit. PM sent me the wrong wheel intially...the phatail wheel hubs are slightly narrower, so the regular non-phatail 8 1/2" wheel wouldn't fit with the spacers provided.more than likely, neither will anyother aftermarket wheel...unless you can find someone to custom fit some wheel spacers. i didn't bother trying to mount the original pulley or rotor...i figured if i was blowing that much money on the kit and wheel, imight as well spend the extra andfinish it off right. i bought the kitin pieces over the course of a yearso it didn't seem like such an expense all at once. i would imagine the original pulley will fit, but i doubtthe originalrotor will line up with the driveside caliper...in fact, the drivesiderotor came already mounted to the wheel direct from PM.
I read somewhere either online at the PM site or in the instructions that I could use my stock rotor. This stuff is new to me so I'm clueless, I don't want to do a half *** job with this kit but if I really don't need something, why buy it, you know. Buying a complete kit would be much easier for sure. Although I stole my kit! I bought it new for 1800!! I got the kit with the frenched plate in the fender. Well thanks for the input....I'm frustrated with the whole thing right now but it should look nice when it's done. Take care, thanks again
Hey go phat, I'm in the Albany area. Where's a good place for lunch in Tupper Lake? My riding buddies and I will plan for a ride up your way come nicer weather.
Hello,
Where abouts in the albany area you from, Albany's nice. I hang out down there once in while. I recommend Little Italy if you're up this way for lunch. Excellent Italian food! Maybe we'll hook up andput on some miles!
Hey Phat, I grew up in the Saratoga (actually Galway) area. We went camping all over the Tupper Lake, Indian Lake, area back in the 70's. My dad still lives in Galway and still goes to Indian lake all the time. Say, is the "PIG" rock still along the highway. You've probably ran into my brother if you've been riding in that area much. He passed away a couple years ago but was ALL OVER with his (now mine) Fatboy. Did you ever get up to Maineto the Lobster Run?? AM-JAM? Sounds like that phattail kit will be sweet when you get it all worked out. I would LOVE to do that to my bike someday.........
