Not sure if this goes for newer bikes but it shows up on my 2001. Thought I'd solved this issue but it's shown up again now that my bike is in for dyno. So, had this happen to be while riding with a buddy. Bike just dies but I can get it to restart while I'm still rolling. Turns out grabbing that bundle of wires that runs along the front of the tank and then under the console and moving it back and forth creates the problem.
Took console off and put dielectric grease on everything and made sure there was no tension on the cable bundle and all has been fine until now. Suspect I'll also have to zip tie the bundle up onto the console somewhere as I bet those cables were getting pulled on during turns and bumps again.
SO, if your bike just dies it's a good first step (apart from checking batt cables) to start her up in neutral and grab a handful of that cable bundle and wiggle it back and forth. May save your *** from a tow one day. I can tell ya I was happy my buddy was with me that day (and that it used to be his bike).
