Anyone know the decibel reading of vance and hines big shot staggered at idle and say 5000 rpm's ? Does the quiet baffles tone them down either bit? . I personally love the sound of them on my softail deluxe but local regulations are starting to crack down on the noise by laws in my part.....
I just bolted up a set of BSS with a set of Quiet baffles last weekend. I did a quick start up with the standard and then the quiet baffles. I didnt ride with the standard. The quiets did "tone" down the harshness for sure but overall still a bit on loud side. Ive read a few complaints about people having issues tring to slide the quiet baffles in the pipe with the fiberglass packing on them. Just tape the edges and middle with masking tape. The paper tape will burn off and it makes the job simple. I pulled the baffles several times when trying baffles combos without any issues.
I do notice an annoying droning and a hammering effect from the pipes. Not sure if its from the crossover chamber or the baffles..

db readings are taken at a given distance. What distance do you want?
At 5k rpm, they are going to be f'ing loud in any case. Why that rpm? Most of my riding is 2k-3k rpm so a measurement at 5k makes no "real-world" sense.
I have BSS installed on my Breakout and rode them for one day without optional quiet baffles. Too loud, high-metallic tone sound and decel popping. Then added optional quiet baffles and the result was a deeper-throaty sound with a few db less than before (guess 2-3db), more back pressure, slightly less decel popping. I add something more. Recently I had a well done dyno tune and the sound now is even better. No more decel popping, less loud and a cleaner, round sound. Now I'm totally satisfied, 'cause this exhaust has a good balance of the right deep sound, not too loud, good performance and nice look.
Hope this can help.

I've been playing with my Fuelpak #s and I did also notice a sound improvement at certain throttle positions. Obviously not to the extent of a dyno tune but a mild improvement.
Not to really go into left field but i have been wundering...I am thinking of putting the quiet baffles in my BSS due to staying alive in the neighborhood. Did you guys have to re-tune once u put in the quieter baffles? Dealer used a sert on my deluxe. Second question is did the original baffle slip out ok after being used for a while or was your pipes real new. Thx
You won't regret optional quiet baffles. As I said they'll add some back pressure which will slightly increase the overall performance, in particular low/middlerange torque. Sound will be deeper and a little more "gentle" (don't imagine they become quiet), neighborhood will appreciate and law enforcement too.
I had dyno tune after having optional baffles installed so can't tell for sure whether you'll need a dyno or not, but I guess it won't be absolutely necessary.
Regarding the original baffles they were installed the day after I had the BSS mounted on the bike so the exhaust was nearly new. As far as I read it might request some effort (but can be done) to change original baffles after a while you used the exhaust due to carbon buildup.
