Default new to me 2000 heritage classic

hey all, well its been about two weeks since i purchased my 2000 heritage from local dealer. was told the bike had their 60 point inspection/service. now im not new to bikes, but this is my first hd so i have a few concerns. i did check fluids and all appear new. just how accurate is the fuel gauge? seems like im getting pretty poor milage. i used the trip on my last bike as there was no gauge. this bike has samson true duals on it, did the carb have to be rejetted? also what is normal engine noise and how loud is it? thought it would be quieter/more exhaust noise. bike runs great with no issues just not sure what to expect. btw the bike has the 88ci with carb. thanks, carl

Mine is an 2004 with a carb. The noise you hear is normal. The top end sounds like a sewing machine. You are also hearing some noise from your balancers in the bottom end, you have an 88B motor.

The noise is even more noticeable running with a windshield in place.

Your bike may, or may not have been rejetted for your pipes.
Those gauges are notorious for inaccuracy.
My gauge will tell me it's empty, when I still have half a tank left.

What I do, is use my tripmeter, and look for gas at 175 miles. I have yet to have had to go to reserve.

thanks for the reply, yeah does sound like sewing machine, kind of a wherring mechanical noise. does come from the topend from what i can tell. guess ill be using the trip again as my gas gauge, as far as the carb, throttle responce is great with no hiccups/hesitation, no popping on decel just a little blueing near the heads. thanks again, carl

Congrats on your new bike. As said, Harley engines are notoriously noisy & more so after they get hot. There is nothing to block the noise from the lifters & rockers, there just natural mechanical sounds, perfectly normal. Ride & enjoy!

Milz, What's funny is while riding at 65 or better I tried many times to shift into Seventh gear.

I'll add my fuel gauge is one of the few in here that has been totally accurate since day one.

Also most other's 88'' owners I know that have a Carb say's then get around 45-50 mpg all the time..
