I have a efi fatboy with slip on mufflers.Pipes are ok but what should a fellow pay for a
improved backing plate for air cleaner and k&n filter.A improved chip and remap will also be added.dealer says allow about 300
is the dealer trying to take advantage or does this sound about right.
Does anybody have a link to the air cleaner kit or the chip and remapping.
Any info helpful before I drop 300 bucks .
I think i could probably install the air cleaner kit but would it run correctly till I decided to take it to the dealer.I figure it probably won't but worth asking instead of dropping 300 bucks at once.
Thanks for any advice.
It's going to get you to the dealer. Some decide never to do the map as they think it a waste. The bike will more than likely backfire, and it won't run as it should...meaning you won't have it tuned to give you the best performance.
But, if you're wanting to save a few bones in labor costs...this way should work for ya...
05 Deluxe- cored the pipes and put a stage 1 kit with remapping- dyno runs before and after yielded 8 HP and a big difference in performance---$350 well spent
Since the topic of efi has come up, I've got a question. I'm not familiar with efi on a motorcycle and I was wondering about something. I have been reading American Iron and it talks about the differences between efi and carb. If a person has to make adjustments on the efi when some custom parts are done on the motor, is it really worth the effort as compared to going to a bike with a carb?
Farboy, I had mine done a couple of week's ago and it was 304 dollars. As for your question Springer, I have efi on my bike and love it,no warming up long,no sputtering but it cost a little more to adjust than a carb.
You can probably install the SE air cleaner yourself. I've done several of them, and it's not rocket science. What you will end up with if you don't remap, is a lean running bike. This means it will run hotter than usual, will probably blue your pipes, and decrease spark plug and oil life.
New Harleys, because of emmissions restrictions, come from the factory very lean, and if you add more air(SE air cleaner, and pipes) without more fuel it just gets leaner. In my opinion it really wouldn't be a good idea to run very long without the remap, but you could certainly run it long enough to get to the dealer for the remap.
