Default Need some help with front end lowering and PC'd lowers

Got a set of lowers powdercoated and a progressive lowering kit for my 05 softail standard, it's not the drop-in kit. I want to go 1" lower in the front. I've got the sliders and wheel off but can't get the internals off. Do I need to remove the threaded plug, that requires a special socket, from the top of the tree? (I've got the bolts off). The manual says to use a piece of rod to knock the spring loose, can someone elaborate? I don't want to go banging around with a hammer.

You're going to have to remove the forks from the trees.

Take that top plug out, and be ready for the spring tension so the plug doesn't go sailing across the room.
Then you're going to need a set of H-D fork rebuild kits to replace the spacers and seals that you disturbed.
Those seals that are still stuck on the fork tubes (below the dust caps) are toast. You can't reuse them.
Plus you'll also need new drain plug screws, damper bolts and the crush washers each needs - and new fork oil.

Another reason why you need to remove the fork tubes from the bike is because you'll need them off in order to seat the new seals...

And if you don't already have a service manual, get one - best $60 you'll ever spend on your ride, and it'll pay for itself on just this one job.
Besides, you'll need it for the many torque values you'll need to know during reassembly.

..and check out this thread for three of the best "how to" videos on tearing down & rebuilding softail forks...
https://www.hdforums.com/forum/softa...k-sliders.html
On my Slim, instead of using 2" PVC (split) as shown in the video (to seat the new seals), I found a piece of 1.5" Schedule 40 PVC split down just one side worked much better to fit over the top tube diameter ...
