As I stated in another thread, I picked up this 2001 Heritage Classic about a month ago. This is my first HD....I have ridden most of my life, but always metric bike....I always wanted a Harley but couldn't afford it until now.
My question is about the exhaust that's on my bike....from the sig pic you can tell the bike has duals with fish tale slip ons
The fish tales aren't my style and I want to change them out with something more my style and something that will create a better sound and also increase performance.
First question is how can I tell what brand exhaust is on the bike....I have looked for markings on the pipes and the slip ons and can't find anything
2nd, are most slips ons standard sizes at the connection end? I don't want to get something that wont fit my pipes
3rd, what would you guys recommend I get to improve sound and performance?
No clue on how to tell but you may be able to do an image search for Harley Fishtail or true duals and find a picture that looks exactly like yours and go to the page.
Oddly enough, I just traded for a 2012 FLSTC with stock everything and I'm looking at the possibility of putting that same exhaust as you have on mine.
Vance and hines website as short videos of their different pipes on various bikes to get an idea of the sound. Pretty good. V&h BSS for my deluxe. I did go with the quiet baffles though and luv them.
Your not going to get great performance increases from true duals on your bike by changing the mufflers. My buddy has a 2013 deluxe and switched from slipons on the stock header to true duals and said he could feel a noticeable loss in torque. As far as sound, the best way to know what you like is to go to local bike nights and check out other bikes and listen to different exhausts.
May not be the answer you are looking for but I put a 2 into 1 on my 02 and really love the sound and performance. Like was said earlier go to bike nites and other gathering places and look and listen may see what you are looking for.
They do sell a non-fishtail muffler for that set up. Won't do anything, power-wise.
My '04 ran very lean with these, and if I do another FLSTC, I'll probably just get some inexpensive slip-on's and the air cleaner, and use my Power Vision to tune.
True duals rob torque, and only make a bit more power on the high end, they say.

Thanks for your response......I have found that my bike tends to run very lean at times as well....I have had a few backfires when killing the engine.
I think I will probably end up with a complete new exhaust and a new air cleaner set up.
i agree with what most of the guys are saying, you should go to some meets and see/hear different bikes with different exhausts.
or you can do what i did and go to your local dealer and ask to hear the customers bikes which they are working on if anything looks good.
i bought my bike second hand and the previous owner had put some slips on, on. they sounds good but they had rusted badly and really bring down the look of the bike, so i was gonna change to V&H big radius as i liked the style and sound but they are too expensive for my taste. then i heard a 48 pull into the dealer which had these simple fat little pipes which turned out to be 'freedom performance' never heard of them, so checked them and and they were cheaper than V&H and looked better plus loads of vids on youtube with my exact bike and the exhaust i wanted.
sorry about the ramble, but yeah check out freedom performance, they have a nice 2-1 (union 2-1) that sounds sick, also vids of it on youtube
For performance you will need to go 2 - 1 and a less restrictive air cleaner than the stock unit, I could not tell from your picture if that is a stock air cleaner. We have the Bassani Road Rage 2 - 1 on our bike and even with the stock air cleaner the bike picked up some performance, I have now gone the full "Stage 1" (air cleaner and exhaust upgrade) on our '12 FLSTC with the Arlen Ness Inverted air cleaner and installed the "Performance chips" Vigilante EZ tuner to fatten up the air fuel ratio, no more decel popping and the engine is running cooler.
