Default Found an mint '02 Carbed Heritage Softail

on an Cycle Trader that's for sale, BUT...

I have a question for you Softail Lovers. Is it a good idea to purchase a bike that had sat 12 years with only 6,900 miles ?.

Got $4,000 worth of goodies on it. I know it's a complete washout.

Asking Price $7500. I'm about to get in touch with him and see what he's got to say. Only problem is that the bike is 1,500 miles away from me. I'm somewhat skeptical of not being able to see the bike, fly down and many 'what if's' afterwards.

Has anybody done it before ?.

TIA,

Thorey

Ive not done a long distance purchase like the one your looking at. But it can't hurt to call it a vacation and if the deal turns out, then bonus.
Id check the area or neighborhood out before heading into the lion's den to see the bike.
On another note, long live the Heritage! The swiss army knife of Harley's!

Be very careful trying to do a long distance buy like that. I got burned pretty bad trying to do that once.

I bought a minty 02 Softail Standard off of Craigslist. Had tons of high end mods. Paid way more than your price so that sounds great. Mine had about 15K miles on it I believe. See if all the maintenance records are available that will give you some degree of confidence. My guy had them all in a binder in sequential order that impressed me. Garage was like an operating room. Ask the owner to send as many high def pictures as possible of every inch of it. I did that and I wasn't at all disappointed upon arrival. I still have the bike and it's been the strongest most reliable beat I've ever owned. Sometimes you just have to trust your gut on some things. I did.

I suggest being a little more patient and getting what you want and not having to travel far to get it. Usually when something is too good to be true it is. Most mechs I've talked too told me to stay away from vehicles that has sat for long periods of time.

I never believe the mileage on the speedometers of motorcycles. They are to easy to disconnect or simply replace with a new or low mileage one.

Looked at the one you are talking about and it looks nice but you can likely find one closer. I had been looking for a Heritage or Fatboy early this year and eventually found a 2002 FLSTF on craigslist about 100 miles from me. Drove up looked it over, bought it, rode it home. I paid about the price you mentioned and it had $9K worth of add ons.

It looks like a nice ride to me, I like the red/silver.
That does seem awful low mileage however it might be accurate if the bike was owned by someone who either bought it on impulse or had to put it in storage for a time.

Either way, since you reached out to the forum you obviously and rightfully so have concerns.

Here's what I would do if I was you; ask if anyone on this forum that lives in the area is willing to go check out the bike to make sure it's a legit deal.
Perhaps even offer a $200 service fee if you make the deal.

Another option is to ask the seller if they are willing to allow the local dealer to check the bike out at your cost.
This will be a minimal cost and give you some peace of mine, the dealer may even broker the deal for you for a fee.

A third option, is let the deal go and keep an eye open for a deal a little closer to home.
$7500 is not one's life savings but nobody wants to risk losing that much either.

Be aware of scams. There is a scam going on on both e-bay and cycle trader where someone offers a bike for cheap. But the bike is out of town and they even offer to have a 3rd party hold the money. They always explain the bike is cheap because they got in a divorce and just want to get rid of it or it belonged to a close relative that has passed. Not saying yoours is this but be careful.....

Have the guy take the bike to an Indy or Dealer with the title and ask them to broker the deal if you're worried. I've done lots of long distance deals and never had a problem. Just take the right precautions.

The mileage or it sitting wouldn't bother me at all.

You're right on the money on that one. It's running on Craigslist as well. Found the same thing going on on a couple of used vending trailer sites too. It's very hard to determine if it's a scam or not. Don't know why the Fed doesn't go after them..
