Default Devil’s Tramping Ground - Bear Creek NC

This barren spot where vegetation will not grow around otherwise fertile woods and farmland has been legend since the mid-late 19th century. I was reading about it in Carolina ghost story books when I was a kid in the early ’60’s.

Did a 300 mile ride today, and the last leg was wandering around south of Siler City in the middle of nowhere looking for this place, because the road isn’t marked (Devil’s Tramping Ground Rd) Guess the locals and the landowner got tired of gawkers.

I'm from Ramseur, and we stop by there all the time when we're out riding. Kind of a strange place and really easy to miss unless you know where it is. Damn kids have trashed the place.

There is a Devil's Tramping Ground Road. That name on a road sign is probably a popular target to get stolen.

I go by there quite often, but I haven't paid attention to whether or not the road sign is actually there.

I rode in from the north end of the road and the round metal sign post was there but no sign on top when I posted this thread.

Interesting, I'll have to take a ride there sometime...I've been all around that place, never knew it was there...

It’s not marked. The only way I knew I was there was a fairly wide pull/off on the west side of the two lane black top that looks like it would get more traffic in and out of it than you would otherwise imagine considering the remote location.

Couple that with a locked farm gate with multiple “keep out” and “no trespassing” signs you know you’ve found it. It’s just a clearing in the woods maybe 50 yards from the gate. It was just interesting to know I was there after reading about the place as a kid 60 years ago.

Knowing the history it did leave me with a pretty creepy feeling when I got off the bike to approach the locked gate.
