I’ve been to the Outer Banks plenty of times on four wheels, but not on two. I’m planning the ride from S.W. Wake county out to "Little Washington” where the map starts, then follow the map, about 600 miles round trip. Either later this year or after the first of the year. Looking for any insights from folks who have ridden the Outer banks on two wheels.

I expect sand is a perpetual issue on Hiway 12 up and down the barrier island. Either blown onto the road by wind off the dunes, road overwash from storms, or just vehicles pulling on the road from the beach. Fortunately we’re reaching the end of hurricane season. Tropical storms can make 12 impassable on an 800 lb street bike.

I’m thinking about just making it a one night stay. Any recommendations for small bike friendly motels or small inns where a bike can be parked close to the room, and current seafood favorites would be welcome.

The Cavalier Motel up in Kitty Hawk.. Great place. If you get a courtyard room, bike will be right out your door. I think there's a couple of other mom and pop places, but we usually like there...
It would be a pretty good ride, especially off season. I would definitely do a good fresh water rinse after though... It would be neet to do the ferry to Ocrakoke..

Have you considered Ocracoke island? It all depends on how you want to split up your trip. If you’re gonna spend time visiting around Kitty hawk or the main part of the outer banks . Then you can take the ferry the next day or just turn around and come back a different way.
We’re actually riding towards that way this morning to Roper to eat at the Landing at Mickey’s.

Probably going to stay down in the fishing village of Buxton to the south near Hatteras, and not make the ferry ride to Ocracoke.

I know of an humble little inn down there. Turns out my sister is friends with the owner.

The deer rut is on in eastern NC so I think this is going to get put off till spring.

The wife and I stayed at The Inn at Pamlico Sound several years ago when it was a bed and breakfast. Nice place... That's in Buxton also.

I love riding the Outer banks, Rt.12 down to Hatteras is amazing on two wheels. Looking at your map, you can take the ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke and then from Ocracoke back to Swan Qaurter. Ive done the ferry many times. Avon has a few more stores open all year round, super market ect.. Last May Hatteras light house wasnt open to walk up to the top, but still worth stopping at. Look to the left in Frisco for the UFO house. If your stopping for food up in Nags head, stop at Sam and Omies. Yes you do need to watch the sand on the road, sometimes after a good storm there is a bit of sand until it is plowed away. Motels, I typically stay in Avon or Ocracoke, cant say one was better than another, its all good all the times I been there.

If you can wait, bike week is end of april.

The deer rut is still happening according to some friend’s game cameras. Baring that, I can still see making a go of it before spring if I get a few good days in the forecast.
