I'm looking for some NEW ride ideas within 150 miles of Hickory NC. Trying to limit it to 150 miles out, so it can be a day trip. Looking for roads or destinations. Little out of the way stops that are unique. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
#1 These are some awesome sites in North Carolina mountains Highlands Area that are little known about. An awesome one day family vacation. About2 hours away from here towards Asheville then on into Transylvania County. Dry Falls is a Full Rushing waterfall you can walk under. Bridal Veil falls is on the side of the road and you can drive under it with the car. Looking Glass falls you can stand right beside. None of these are a long walk to get there and you are right on the waterfalls. Cullasaja Falls runs under the road. You have to stop and get out to get a good view of the actual falls. Great little places to eat also. I recommend you try the Moose Cafe in Asheville at the Farmers Market Exit off interstate 40 for Breakfast on the way or Dinner on the way home. When you turn left on the exit ramp going toward Hendersonville you will see the Moose Cafe just on the other side of the Interstate Bridge. There are a bunch of waterfalls in this area. Oh yeah, donât miss the drive thru the Pisgah National Forest. This is where sliding rock falls is located. Those kids are nuts to do that but they actually go down it. The water must be freezing coming off those mountains.

Jeff;
IMHO 150 miles on a motorcycle isn't even a before breakfast ride to my wife and I. We wouldn't know what to do with ourselves for the next 10 or so hours of the day..
I/we rode 70,000 miles in 2006 in the mountains of SC.NC.TN.VA.WV.GA. I/we could write a book on these areas.I know places to eat that the same family have owned since the late 18 hundreds, I know all kinds of out of the way places in these mountains and surrounding areas.
Break yourself out a map and give me a call 704-236-2885 I'd be happy to point you to some real cool places if you don't mind riding more the 150 miles!
PS: As someone else has posted already, you might want to look Rahlo (Rusty) up as he rides SC. & NC. alot. I've rode with him a few times and he's not only one of the nicest guys you could ever want to meet, he also rides the wheels of his Sportster.
I like riden hwy.421-N out of Boone,NC over to Shady Valley,Tn. Between Mountain City,TN and Shady Valley,TN 421 is AWESOME and the store at the x-roads in Shady Valley is a big hangout for motorcyclist , they also made a mean burger. After you leave Shady Valley you could head over towards Damascus,Va and pick-up hwy.58E , 58 is so curvy it will make you dizzy. Run hwy.58 over to Mouth of Wilson,Va. and pick up up hwy.221S back towards W. Jefferson,NC and back toward Boone. According to myRand Mcnally program thats a 194 mile round trip out of Hickory.
Hey guys, thanks for the ideas. Here's the reason for 150 miles out of Hickory. I'm trying to find some different rides for our HOG chapter. It seems that we do the same rides year after year, and we want to find someplace new to explore. We have some real candy a$$e$, and they don't like the all day rides like I do.
To give you an idea of what I'm up against, we had a ride this last Saturday... a shotglass run. It was 500 miles that had to be done in 12 hours. We didn't know the destination beforewe metat the dealer. They told us it was Low Country in Charleston. Only 7 riders showed up out ot a membership of 250. The other 243 missed out on a GREAT ride!
Something else I've been trying to find are some "female friendly" (politically correct phrase) destinations. I figure if I can find something like that, maybe the ladies will be more enthused about riding. If we can get them out and riding, then maybe they will want more saddle time.
Please... keep the ideas coming. Chuck, I'll give you a call soon.

Another twist to this , you could leave the x-roads at Shady Valley, Tn and follow 421-S back towards Boone,Nc / Mountain City,Tn. When you get to Mountain City hang a right on hwy.67N/W towards Elizabethon,Tn , run this for about 20 miles and turn left on hwy.321S back towards Boone , this section of 321 is beautiful and curvy.
