Plan to take my bike to Florida after Christmas. We are visiting family in Jacksonville Beach. We plan to ride down along the St. John's River and head over to A1A to go south to about Cocoa Beach to spend the night. Can you tell me about places to stay, places to eat, and pubs to drink beer?

(A) is an ancient biker beer-stop - now the Old Florida Grill & Oyster House, formerly The Red-fish Inn. Food is fine but save eating a real meal until later. Do have a beer out back at one of the tikis though (sandy parking so careful).
(B) and (C) are at the port of Cape Canaveral, a major league food/beer rich environment. We happen to prefer the food at Grills next to the boat ramp (eastern end of the area and sometimes good for a laugh - some boaters can't). All restaurants there are excellent and have their own "style" - you'll see.
(D) is the Cocoa Beach Pier - another great beer-stop with lots of "touristy" stores to also prowl through on the pier itself.
(E) is true Cocoa Beach - the ocean end of our downtown area. Coconuts is more good food and the old Beachshack bar is right across the street. Gets crowded on the weekends but another very biker friendly and "feature rich" area so at a minimum, stroll west on Minutemen Causeway a couple of blocks and maybe a block or two north of Minutemen Causeway (almost all residential south of Minutemen). Try out both the north-bound and the south-bound streets of A-1A, look around, and safe - no "bad" sections in the area.

Rangerat, what about places to stay? How is the LaQuinta Inn?
I'm not a great source for which one might be best but La Quinta certainly isn't the worst. Personally speaking, Fawlty Towers is right next to the "Ron Jons" corner (heavy visited tourist area, lots of good local stores, etc.) so you might consider it as well. No matter which ones you decide to check out though, call them personally and work a discount of some sort. Times are REAL tough now and you should expect to receive a great deal.
Generally speaking, there are only a few local flops here and there and all of the "majors" are just fine. Local crime rate here on "the beach" is pretty low too so not much chance of a locked scoot in a well-lit parking lot getting any unwanted attention. Speaking of that sort of stuff, if you CCW in Indiana then your license is honored here in FL too.
Holler when you decide and maybe Cheryl (she was born and raised up that way in Griffith) and I can hook up with y'all for a beer or two.
