My plan was to rent a bike in Stuart but after calling them today I found that they aren't renting anymore because of insurance reasons. I may be screwed now.
Check out Ft. Lauderdale thats not going to be that much further down the road from Stuart.
Mnblaster, rhubarbs advice is sound, the blue hairs ( I have no hair) and the new arrivals are very dangerous additions to the normal risk we take on down here. Harley of Miami is a good palce to rent, just over the border of Broward, web is HARLEYC@MIAMIHARLEY.COM, phone is 305 651 4811, found this to be a fair dealer in my area, drop a PM me and the OL might join you for the ride if its okay with you. Good starting location to hit the keys and the alley in a couple days
Palm Beach Harley also rents unless they stopped also, and is closer to Ft Pierce than Ft Lauderdale.
They should have bikes since bike week will be over at that time.
There are a lot of nice rides in that area (between Ft pierce and Jupiter, and out to Okechobee.
Stay away from Boca Raton, and I-95 during rush hour.
All the snow birds are down and do not know how to look for motorcycles and cant hear them even with their hearing aides set to 11.
I carry a hammer on my bike and knock off the side view mirrors of people that do not pay attention. (That is the best souveneir for vacationers)
the ride to key west is the best...use card sound road (toll road in the beginning of keys) ..i-95 is real bad..avoid at all cost during rush hours (7am to 8pm)..please read the posts above regarding red lights...3 cars WILL cross on RED..stop signs are only suggestions...and never expect someone to use their blinkers...by the way do not use yours either as it is a signal for cars behind you to speed up...if a car is near you, expect them to stop for no reason, turn right from a left lane and going the wrong direction is not rare... extra caution with the turnpike, assume the person behind you will not stop..carry plenty of change or better yet purchase a sun pass transponder....reminder that south florida is an international location, many out of towners, many new comers to the U.S.A and many different combinations of drivers..young, old, lost etc.

If you head to the Keys from Ft. Pierce I suggest you ride out to the bottom of Lake Okeechobe (sp) and pick up hwy 27 south. It will take you along the edge of the Everglades and bypass the nasty city traffic in Miami, Ft Laud. & Palm Beach. Have fun!
Do not ride on the 41 between Naples and St. Pete unless you like to breath in exhaust and just love stop and go traffic, all day long. I agree 1a1 is a nice ride. Keys are great , Mark...
do not miss the keys...check the internet for events.. some of the days are best avoided..
a+ verygood point regarding "hwy us 27", you can avoid alot of traffic and also stop at griffin road and hwy 27 to see some gators and rest..then a little further down south on 27 to krome ave. and make a right ..take krome all the way down pass indian casino to the start of the keys...longest portion with-out gas is less than 35 miles through first portion of trip on 27 and krome....
us 27 is 4 lanes(2 up and down) with very wide grass median and a few rest areas
krome is 2 lanes(one up/one down)
keys has a mix but speed is not an option...most is 45mph max, take card sound road at beginning $1 as the beginning really sucks unless you take card sound road... the traffic is really bad..
in key west try B and O on caroline and william, a hole in the wall with the freshest and by key west standards least expensive place to eat..open air/nothing more than a food truck with some wood attached..you can park your bike about 2 feet away. right on the corner...the sunset boat tours are not to far away...walking..2 minutes.
