I have a trip planned in May and will be traveling from Tallahassee to Key West, staying overnite in Naples. I need some advise on routing from Tallahassee to Naples. I'm planning to take hwy. 19/27/98 south out of Tallahassee and then pick up hwy. 41 somewhere south of Tampa. My question is whether I would be better off staying on this hwy. straight thru Tampa / St. Pete and pick up hwy. 41 at Bradenton, or go inland to Lakeland on hwy. 98/17, bypassing Tampa / St. Pete completely and pick up hwy. 41 in Punta Gorda. I'm interested in the most scenic route obviously but also want to avoid as much stop and go as possible.
I'm hoping someone is familiar with this route and can give me some advice ahead of time and help me avoid any possible traffic or highway nightmares.
I'm not going to say I know what it's like all the way through Tampa, but I do know the traffic starts getting bad south of weeki Wachee. I believe if I were you, I'd go inland on 98 and pick up hwy 39 and go through Plant City. Stay on 39 pass Plant City and it runs into hwy 62 which can take you back to hwy 41. From there your on your own because I have no idea what the ride is like.
I would really concider not going through Tampa on 41 if you don't want stop and go.
DO NOT TAKE41 FROM TAMPA TO NAPLES .. Did it once and was soooo slooow . Take the 75 and bypass that area, I still shudder when I think of that ride..mark...
Ray, if you want some detailed ways to go, email me. I'll take you thru some great scenery of the west coast of FL. But I would definately stay away from Tampa during morning rush hour and from 3:00-7:00pm rush. I work nights so I can't tell you what the time for morning rush is. I also wouldn't run 41 from Tampa to Naples either. Like the other dude said, it would be just a waste of your time. Not reallly much to see on 39 south of Plant City.
I lived in Naples and rode up through your area. Take 19/98 down toCheifland, then alt 27 to 27 all the way down to 29 at Palmdale then 846 in Immokalee to naples or 27 on down to I-75 aka. Gator Alley into Naples. Alternate route ,19/98 to Crystal River then 44 to hi27 and on south. There many roads, other roads in the south area that offer a change I like 27 toward Moorehaven,on to 80, turn right to 833 to 846. This is known as the Deil Gardens area and has very little traffic. If you have the time takeUS-41 towards miami, not much traffic, and go north on 997, traffic in this area, back to hi 27 north to south bay. Then hi 441 to hi 60 back to 27 and home. Check out everglades City and Chokoloskee, these town have not changed all that much in years. Naples will cost a small furtune to stay in very long . Moved to nc mountains 10 years ago and have not been back.
