I am returning after 6 years in Vegas. I bought my bike out here and there is no inspections like I hear about in TX. My main concern is the taillights I converted to all red on the rear with HD kit. Not sure about the law there. Is it possible to get them as easy as knowing a buddy that does it?
Cool my brother was telling me once that license plate frames were illegal. Something about if it touches any lettering or something. So I was curious how strict they were about bikes.
amber is ok for rear turns....brake lights are red. Yeah they made a huge deal out of announcing that frames could not obscure any lettering....haven't heard about it since then...no personal knowledge of any arrests or inspection problems.
Here is the Teaxs traffic code that covers your question. It really pertains more so to passenger cars than your average motorcylce. Also remember that your inspection certificate is supposed to be visible from the rear of the bike.
Hope this helps.
§ 502.409. WRONG, FICTITIOUS, ALTERED, OR OBSCURED LICENSE PLATE. (a) A person commits an offense if the person attaches to or displays on a motor vehicle a number plate or registration insignia that: (1) is assigned to a different motor vehicle; (2) is assigned to the vehicle under any other motor vehicle law other than by the department; (3) is assigned for a registration period other than the registration period in effect; (4) is fictitious; (5) has letters, numbers, or other identification marks that because of blurring or reflective matter are not plainly visible at all times during daylight; (6) has an attached illuminated device or sticker, decal, emblem, or other insignia that is not authorized by law and that interferes with the readability of the letters or numbers on the plate or the name of the state in which the vehicle is registered; or (7) has a coating, covering, or protective material that: (A) distorts angular visibility or detectability; or (B) alters or obscures the letters or numbers on the plate, the color of the plate, or another original design feature of the plate. (b) Except as provided by Subsection (f), an offense under Subsection (a) is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $200, unless it is shown at the trial of the offense that the owner knowingly altered or made illegible the letters, numbers, and other identification marks, in which case the offense is a Class B misdemeanor.
OK, I know this is an old thread, but I'm wondering if I could get a little clarification. I heard somewhere that - at least in Texas - you cannot have a steady-burning amber light facing the rear; stop light, yes; turn signal, yes; hazard flasher, yes; taillight, NO, it must be red.
Just bought an 07 FLSTC in Missouri and rode it back to Texas; it has an LED taillight and turn signals, all red, all burning steadily, and wired to light up together when braking. The turn signal bar is bent and I was thinking of replacing it with the stock bar with the amber turn signals; but I'm thinking it's not kosher to have the amber turn signals burning steadily as running lights.
Of course, I also don't know yet where that aftermarket set of LED lights came from. It may have a non-stock wiring harness, and I may not be able to mix-and-match the LED taillight with the incandescent turn signals. Several things I don't know here.
All red rear end shouldn't get you a ticket. Inspection wise you do need red reflector in rear. 1 inch round reflectors that hold license to license plate frame will pass.
Yes, I believe you're right about that. But with the stock lighting, the amber turn signals only light up when your turn signals or flashers are on. With my current all-red rear end lights, the turn signals burn all the time as running lights, then brighter as turn signals/stop lights. I'm afraid that if I changed the turn signal lenses back to the stock orange it won't be legal any more.
