I'm getting a little worried about hwy 2 in Cal. See several posts above for "official" road status. I think the Big Pines area just got blasted again this week with snow. In addition, whatever is going on in the LaCanada area looks serious. I don't think either of these areas will be passable for us in a week.
Tony, you just let the rest of us take care of this. Don't need you planning the route, who knows where we would end up.
Did a little more looking today and found there are two closures on CA2 and one closure on CA1. I updated the map and marked them, you have to zoom in to see the lines. At least I think these are the proper locations. I also called Newcomb's and got a lot of info. They did get some snow last week. With their help, I changed the route on CA2 around the closures. Cuts out what is probably the best part of that road, Newcomb's is at about 5500 ft. Wrightwood is also at 5500 ft. The closed road between the goes up over 8000 ft. I also put in a little side trip to Newcomb's. It's a Bar and Grill that gets a lot of biker traffic. We can make that a last minute call since it would detour us off the main route.
The one on CA1 looks ugly, I don't see a way around it without skipping a lot of CA1. I marked it on the map. We could just go north to the road block, turn around to the nearest detour and go around. Then get back on CA1 and head south to the road block. Again, this could be a last minute decision depending on how the day is going.
There are a lot of places with "1-way controlled traffic" on CA1. I count 12. You could probably call them delays instead.
Who knows, maybe things will improve in a week.
Merdahl...if Highway 1,south of San Francisco is closed because of the slide, take 280 out of S. San Francisco to Highway 84. Take 84 back over to the coast and you can resume your ride on Highway 1 in Half Moon Bay. You can stop at Alices restaraunt for some good food and drinks, Very biker friendly.
****edit**** Oops...nevermind. I see that is the opposite direction you are going. Well....you can reverse that and go out to 280 from Half Moon Bay and go north on 280 to South San Francisco. That will get you around Devils Slide on Highway 1.

Thanks hxturbo, the closure is further south near Plaskett. Also thanks for the tip on Alice's Resturant. http://www.alicesrestaurant.com/index.html
I added a marker to the map, perhaps we will stop by.
i just checked Devils slide and it looks like they opened it. It was closed near Montara, just below S, San Francisco for awhile. And I was wrong about the bypass road. It is 92 not 84. Have a great trip. BTW..The area around Alices is fantastic for riding. The twisties and the redwood trees make for a great ride.
I'm doing tjhe opposite of your ride starting May 27th from San Diego and spending 7 days riding around Arizona.
