I actually just realized today, since I cut off the tips of my heat shields I can now see in my pipes... I never knew but the previous owner had removed the baffles.
Now I get an ocassional pop now and then when decelerating with a hair on the throttle, but I don't have the knowledge or experience to know what it's affecting by not having them. I've also noticed the bike is slow to get up and go from a standstill in first, I had attributed this with the 883 model, but could it be from having no baffles?
Would installing baffles back into the pipes increase performance?
Install DK Customs thunder torque inserts. It should increase your low and mid-range torque and deepen the sound. It is made to eliminate/reduce reversion.

These are stand-alone? They aren't just a modification of the stock baffles? Because I don't have the baffles, I don't know what the previous owner did with them.

TTIs are special designed torque cones that are installed in your exhaust/slipons. It is a simple install and a very inexpensive investment. DK customs webiste stated: All the Vance & Hines Systems and Slip-ons we've tested produce more power, and a bit deeper tone with TTI's Installed. The V&H's respond particularly well to TTI's, with or without the baffles!
If you go to the link I provided in my previous response and click on one of the TTIs, there are videos of different exhaust systems with and without baffles using TTIs.
If you have questions, pm Kevin and he will answer any of your question specific to your VH Big Radius...the folks at DK Customs are very responsive. If you are patient, he will probably find this thread to respond to your challenges shortly....he normally does.
No doubt you lost low end torque if the baffles were removed. Kevin from DK Customs says most of his tests showed best performance came from no baffles with TTI's installed.
I am selling a set of W258's if you are looking to buy a pair, although I think they might be too big for your pipes.
Measure the ID of the pipes then you can play with the right size TTI's.
The part number is the approximate OD in inches of the TTI.
I played with a few combinations of 1/4" and 5/16" eye bolts to alter the flow and backpressure on my SEII mufflers with the baffles in.
Picture a lollypop in the pipe to alter flow.
If the pipes are really straight through , they will have a pretty soft feel in the low RPM range , and pretty good on the high end.
Problem is , getting through the soggy low end to get to the fun part of the range.
As you close down the pipe ID , the response will increase to a certain point and then get worse as it gets too small for your riding style.
Even a bushing that closes the ID 1/4" overall will help get some torque back.
I'm pretty sure the 118 TTI would be 1 1/8" OD
The 158 TTI would be 1 5/8" OD
And etc.
At least that's my understanding of them.
Certainly cheap enough to try anyway.
