I love my air shocks but am awar eof their limitations compared to top end units. Trouble is they just look so right with the gaiters and mimics the front end of my Iron, so am reluctant to get rid of them. I'm such a tart!
I've had my RK shocks for a few years now and have no intention to change them, I really can't imagine anything being any better, I love them.
I switched out my air shocks on the RK to Ohlins. These are the ticket. Thought about putting the RK shocks on the Sporty, but now may upgrade to the Ohlins.
I never used air shocks, despite having a set off my Glide - they went in the bin where they belong! I have Hagons on my Sporty at present, which are reasonable, but will probably replace them with Hagon Nitro shocks before long. I have Ohlins on my Glide (what a world of a difference they make!), so will also consider the less expensive models from them.
One of the lessons I learned over in the Touring section is that some members skate around trying umpteen cheap-n-cheerful brands of shocks, wasting money and time, before seeing the light and buying top quality ones - hence my Ohlins.
Ohlins? Some time ago, after reading an article in a motorcycle mag, I purchased a set of Ohlins Emulsion shocks. For the money I spent, they were a disappointment. So, 'let the buyer beware.'
I went from stock to the air ride to Progressive 444's on my Iron, to me each change was an upgrade to the previous setup. I do love the look of the air shocks with gaiters best as others have noted above. Hard question to address as bike setup, rider(s)/luggage weight and riding style/preference all contribute to what is perceived as the "best" ride. I'm still on the stock tires on my Iron but on many of my other bikes tires alone change the feel of the ride a good bit too. I have heard good ride reports from riders with Ohlins but have never tried them myself.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. The key there is 'some time ago'. The reality is that Ohlins have only started listing their shocks for Harleys in relatively recent times, however we have a tame expert and HDF sponsor who has been custom building them for us for a lot longer than Ohlins. I've had mine for just over six years now and they are excellent, straight out of the box. Plenty of other happy owners around HDF!
