I think it all comes down to personal preference, and agree, as an adult those people can choose. I always wear a helmet and will never ride in shorts, but I will ride in a t-shirt and my vest on hot days. I would not be comfortable riding in shorts or with no helmet, but hold nothing against those who choose to ride that way. In the end we are all riders.

I always will put my chaps on over my shorts..... Thanks Zeb for that great idea. You dont happen to be in a band called the'Viliage People'
No, I'm not in that band. I'm just a dusty old cowboy of sorts out west who thinks it's pretty idiotic that people will suit up in all of their protective gear minus a helmet, and then stick their nose up and makewisecracks like yours at those who wear shorts and a helmet when they ride.

Dumb Pr!ck.

It's obvious I've struck a nerve with the no-helmet, leather wearers.

Good, paybacks a bitch.

Good attitude.

I also don't judge those who ride with no helmets; I just get sick of those who apparentlythink I'm an idiot or whateverfor wearing shorts on occasion, while they ride without helmets all the time.

It makes no sense to me, and it's obviously struck a nerve with some like that in here.

BTW, didn't the "Villiage People" biker wear a leather hat rather than a helmet?

Ahem.

I caught flak froma "biker" for wearing a full face one day when it was 20 degrees outside. When I asked him where his bike and helmet was he said "it was too cold to ride". I looked at him, laughed, the two parts guys laughed and that was the end of the conversation.

I remember when I started riding when there were no helmet laws in the early '60's. The first helmet I bought was for AMA scrambles racing because they wouldn't let you race without one. We never wore helmets when street riding. It was kind of like the difference between sand lot baseball and Little League. If you wanted to play in Little League, you had to wear a batting helmet, but in sand lot, we never did. And you know something? None of us was ever hurt as a result. Today I won't go anywhere without a helmet, and I'm not sure why. I realize the damage I could do, or it is socially responsible, or it is the law? Danged if I know, but I will always wear one now and feel naked without one. When D.O.T. originally told the States, "if you want Federal highway money, you have to pass a mandatory motorcyle helmet law" I was REALLY po'd. But now, it's just second nature to throw on the brain bucket. I never leave home without it - on! However, I still believe everyone should be able to make their own choice...

I think it is simply a matter of choice. Myself I ride with long sleeves, jeans, boots, gloves and a Fullface no matter the weather. I guess, seeing as I am on a Motorcycle i should probably just ride Nude, all the protective gear is simply an attempt to lessen the injuries anyway, right? So if ya gonna ride with shorts on, why waste the time and effort to wear a helmet? Personally I wouldn't ride to my mailbox without a helmet, I have hit the pavement at 30MPH and know the feeling, but if you choose to ride in shorts and No helmet or any combonation of all or nothing for safety wear, what is that to me?
In my case, the helemt saved my life, and the jeans, gloves and long sleeves saved me from some major surgeries to repair all the Road rash I would have had. To not wear all the gear to me is ,,, well my opinion and I will reserve that opinion because I don't want to start some **** about my Opinion.

I'm with you on this one. I only once ever went down (on the bike that is!!). I was crossing a railway track, the roads were clear but there was frost on the timbers separating the rail tracks - the *** end of the bike came round 90 degrees & I fell off. 40 yrs later I still have the stretch marks on my backside & if I hadn't been wearing jeans, leather jacket, helmet & gloves all of which were badly scuffed or torn I would have been in a darn sight worse state. Like you I wouldn't even ride the shortest distance without my helmet, etc, on. It is a personal choice I agree & good luck to the guys in shorts, tees & no helmets!!

Zeb,

I am all for choice, provided it doesn't hurt anyone but yourself. I am in a no helmet state and use one sometimes and don't sometimes, but I make it a habit of wearing long pants.

There is adifference between a helmet and shorts. The chances of having a crash and receiving a head injury are much less than accidentally touching a hot pipe in shorts and receiving a bad burn. To me it's not as much about roadrash as it is about burns, as I agree that if you go down a helmet is just as important as long pants and boots.

The last time I rode with shorts was when I had just serviced the wife's Lowrider and took it for a short shakedown. Got back to the garage and accidentally let my right calf touch the pipes. I still have a scar.

Be that as it may, it should be the individual's choice as long as it is only the chooser that is getting hurt.

Bill
