I've got a Mikuni on my '89 and it certainly improved the bike!!
To some mechanics, they refer to the Mikuni as "bolt on power." Nuff sed!
They are easily "tune-able" and parts are available all over the place.
There are quite a few threads on here about them, so have a good butchers at them. i think that most of your questions will be answered.
