Default Point float or limiter?

Just got an 883H 2003 Anniversary model a month ago, rode it home and never really cranked it up much. (1200 kms, 750 miles) I putt around town and yesterday on a back road I decided to take her to the hilt, drag style. No tach so, just feeling the engine torque curve. At about 70 to 80 kph in first, she just got weird sounding and the power dropped off to zero. Is there a rev limiter on these Sportsters? This is my first one and I don't know too much about them, from a pure technical standpoint. Or, did I simply achieve point float velocity? I thought they were electronic ignition.

Yes, there's a rev limiter and it sounds like you found it.

They are electronic ignition, so no point float. With hydraulic lifters it is theoretically possible to get valve float, however with the engine management system installed it is far more likely you hit the rev limiter. You can get a speedo with integral tacho, if that sounds useful.

Thank you! I really don't need the tach, now that I know. I have a pretty good sense of powerband once I get used to an engine, now I have learned more about this bike. It's actually a really fun ride.
