This is the second time this has happened. I have a 08 Sportster custom with the 4.5 gas tank. I went to get gas at a Shell station and the gas pump would not allow the pump to start so I could not get gas. Went down the block to and Arco and the same thing happened. Seems the nozzle is to long and hits the part of the tank that goes over the frame and will not start the fuel. Then went to a 76 station and it worked fine. Has anyone else seen this? This maybe only in California because of smog. Is there a way to force it to work.
dont put the pump in so far in the tank... and pump slow... watch your levels as you go. i had gas spurt up out of the tank and squirt me in the eyes because i filled it up too fast and didnt pay attention to the levels. on most pumps like said above... you need to hold it back
Pull the accordion collar back to start gas flow. It's a bit awkward, but it will also keep from scratching your tank with the collar.
I always hold the spout up at the top so I can see as it gets close to full. Also, try to just trickle in the gas slowly, or you could get a big spill if you just force the gas in. It takes some "fine motor skills" to accomplish, but I'm sure you can do it.
Yes, pulling/pushing that collar is the trick. Did a CA trip with two other buddies a couple years ago. We're originally from SoCal, so knowing those tricks and we were good. A PITA when you get a slow pump.
