Wow, I see the title of this topic has changed from " if you live in the mountains you are going down" to the less inflammatory " accident statistics". A well thought out post, with real statistics, and a warning to the members to be safe riding on this holiday weekend would of been more informative and sufficient.

I think one of the most dangerous periods for people are when they get their first bikes, complete some basic training, and then get over confident and ride beyond their capabilities.
Believe I read somewhere that over 50% of motorcycle fatalities were 'single vehicle' accidents, meaning that the accident was caused by rider error (or maybe equipment failure in a few cases).
People need to be careful out there....

Make sure you check your brake and axle bolts after stopping at the mountain gas station for a bite to eat.
