I had an 02 BMW R 1150 RT and bought the 1200C as a companion bike for it. I love the BMW but it was just too sterile and the biggest thing missing was the "fun" factor. I had so much fun with my Sportster that I ended up selling the BMW because I never rode it any more. It's been a year now and I have to admit I don't miss it. Sure, there's a difference when I take a trip but I still smile more on the Sportster.
As an added thought: I had a Heritage Classic and that bike would be a great companion to your Sportster.
Had my Sporty on the highway for the first time, can't get used to the engine screeming in 5th gear, and I was only doing 60mph.

I have to admit that, at first, it bugged me a little doing the shorter highway runs I would do locally. After going 70 to 80 for over 300 miles on the highway one trip, it just started to sound natural.

I ended up getting an 04 BMW R1150GS figuring it would be my "touring" motorcycle and I would keep using the Sportster for local runs. I did a long trip recently and was "planning" to ride the BMW, but long story short, something happened with the BMW that forced me to use the Sportster instead. I did not have a windshield or saddlebags on the Sportster, just sissy bar and luggage rack and it did just fine for me. I've done one overnight trip with the BMW, and this 4 day run with the Sportster now and by far enjoyed the Sportster the most. I agree with the feeling that the BMW is more "sterile". It handles better than the Harley, but aside from that it just doesn't excite me.
In any case, I'm selling the BMW and have gotten a windshield and ISO grips, and will probably get saddlebags with detaching hardware for the Sportster. I would ultimately like to get another larger motorcycle, but can't quite afford it now and my recent trip has shown me that the Sportster will work for my current touring needs. With the detachable hardware I'm getting I can strip it down for local riding, then build it back up for travel.
Currently have a 99 sportster and love it. Added an 06 road king classic and feel like I have the best of both worlds. Considerred a hertiage softail classic but wantedthe touring ride. Couldn't be happier. Great touring bike for two ups and long rides. good luck in whatever you do. I appreciate two harleys.
