Hi,
My check engine light just started coming on. On for a few seconds then off - only after I've ridden the bike about 30 miles and then slow down. Once when it was on, my speedometer needle went all the way to zero for a few seconds, then back up. My oil temperature looks normal. Any ideas? I thought of changing oil, filter, sparkplugs, air cleaner and maybe new master fuse. I just went over 30,000. It's a 2005 XL883C. It's been maintained. Any ideas?
I too have a 2005 XLH 883 and today the symptoms appeared! Just had the dealer work it over last week due to a dead battery and after a new voltage regulator, was sent on my way...then this starts...check engine light, speedometer drops suddenly...at times when it decelerates or takes a turn up hill... any help?
usually your check engine light is for your emission, like your o2 sensors or your mapping sensor and so on. your oil filter and all does not apply. try checking your o2 sensors on your exhaust pipes. there are one on each pipe. see if there are any broken wires or maybe unplugged. if not then i would scan for a code. and also if your gas cap does not seal good that will also cause your engine light to come on. take your gas cap off then put it back on and make sure it cliks three times. and check the rubber o ring on the cap to make sure its not craked or worn out. hope this might help.
when the light comes on does it run like crap? if so it is most lilely a bad crank position sensor...that happened to mine a while back..it was replaced and all is good now..
FYI, his Sportster is 05 carb model, no O2 sensors. Low or excessive voltage could also set the check engine light. The gas cap on a car is part of the evap system, it will set a code after a few drive cycles if the cap leaks or opens, I have never seen this on a bike though unless the latest 07 has evap control but I doubt it.

Oil sensor....make sure the little wire is plugged in tight......mine, HC's have done that from time to time and that rubber plug gets loose from the vibration.
