Default Combo digital speed/analog tach

I bought the speedo and fuel sensor and the dealer installed them today on my 2016 1200C. They had to pull my tank several times, and after 6 hrs of labor, informed me that they had to call the motor company's tech support because they were stumped.
I need to add that this is a very large dealership and they install these speedo routinely.
The problem was the speedo has the fuel warning light on constantly with a message of low range. Nothing they could do could solve it.
They gave me the bike back in this condition and told me they will call me when the motor company tells them how to proceed

Has anyone else run into this. I am pretty frustrated at the situation, however, the dealer is not going to charge me for the install so that is a relief

I posted this in the thread talking about the tach/speedo. Added a new thread for visibility

I never opted to have the fuel sensor add-on. Right after I bought my bike the "low fuel" sensor to activate the 'idiot' light was replaced because it was faulty, figured since i had a brand new low fuel sensor I wouldn't mess with it. my Odometer is more of a fuel gauge than anything.

I hope they get it figured out for you, I would have to think the fuel sender they installed has a problem. hopefully they get it figured out and it doesn't cost you much downtime... its always a bummer when you drop $300-$500 on some upgrade parts and they give you trouble out of the box...

Also, if you can still edit the title, you may want to add "Sender Problem" or something so people know your seeking advice...

I am thinking about buying this for my bike. I will be installing it my self. I was not sure if I was going to get the fuel sender but I guess I will. Hope mine works. Good luck getting yours fixed.

It seems that the fuel sensor doesn't work on its own. It cannot send data to the speedo. It needs the Master Cylinder Sportster Fuel Gauge to work, link here :

I had kind of similar issue but with the stock speedo. See post #133

Once U've installed the MAster Cylinder fuel gauge, u can activate the fuel gauge on the speedo as well which means u'll end up with 2 fuel gauge plus the low fuel indicator light.

I opted to just get the gauge, no sender. the gauge install is about 15 minutes, including the odometer transfer. I imagine the fuel sender is a 1-2 hour job (draining and pulling the tank)

If you want to make it easy, you can get the speedo and decide later if you want to go throug the pain for the "4-bar fuel gauge" It only shows you four levels of "full" (100%, 75%, 50%, 25%)

wasnt enough data for me to care. when the red light turns on I will go get myself some fuel.

I am not saying your wrong, because you have real-world experience with this and I do not, but I have never heard this to be a requirement. As far as I know, all you need is the proper fuel sender for the gauge.
If you already have a fuel gauge on your MC, it would be pointless to duplicate that data to the main gauge unit....

Not to contradict you, but the install instructions state if your Master Cylinder gauge is installed, it WILL NOT also send the data to the speedo gauge, and the MC gauge would have to be disabled...

HD website says the following:
'07-'13 XL models require separate purchase of Fuel Sensor Kit P/N 61200008A to make use of the fuel level and range function.
http://www.harley-davidson.com/store...900274--1#tabs

Additional Parts Required
To enable fuel level and fuel range functionality, SportsterŽ models require separate purchase of Fuel Sensor kit (part no. 61200008). If fuel sensor kit is not installed, 2007 Sportster models require separate purchase of Fuel Sender Resistor kit (part no. 72545-08).
The SportsterŽ Fuel Sensor kit (part no. 61200008) is not compatible with SportsterŽ Fuel Gauge kits (part no. 75031-09 and 75338-09). The motorcycle cannot support multiple electrical fuel gauges. If Fuel Gauge kit (part no. 75031-09 or 75338-09) is equipped, it must be disabled or the Fuel Sensor kit (part no. 61200008) cannot be installed and the fuel function of this speedometer kit will not function.

requires nothing related to the Master Cylinder gauge in their instructions...

I believe you are correct. I know people who have the speedometer and the sending unit and every thing works just fine.

You guys got me all worried!

Wife bought Gauge kit(PN#-70900475), and fuel lvl sensor kit(PN#-61200008A) as Christmas gift for me.
I have installed Gauge itself few weeks ago when it was warm, but haven't had chance to installed the sensor yet, and this entire thread just made me go over everything, and make sure that this combo works on my 2016 FortyEight...
(because I don't know where the receipt went if I needed to return the sensor unit...)

I wish I could say that there is no reason to worry. I checked with my dealer today and the motor company had not responded to their request for tech support. I informed my dealer that in that case I wanted the sensor kit 61200008A removed, and a refund for the sensor. If Harley could not respond to tech support I will use the odometer to tell me when to buy gas.
Very disappointed in the whole experience.

I know it doesn't make sense and my bike was in for over a week for the delaer trying to resolve this till they consult moco and the reply was that you need the master cylinder fuel gauge for the fuel sensor/sender to
work.

My scenario is slightly different from Harleyrider4300 but close enough for me to share my experience that might help. This is what exactly happen to me :

Sportster Roadster 2016 XL1200CX
Stock Speedo
Bought the fuel gauge kit (http://www.harley-davidson.com/store...fuel-gauge-kit) it comes with the Master Cylinder Gauge AND Fuel sensor/sending unit.

At default settings,
Fuel gauge on Master works fine and NO fuel gauge on speedo

TheHHMF discovered a way to activate the fuel gauge in the stock speedo in the thread I shared earlier so I figured might as well remove the Master Cylinder Gauge and retain that new sending unit to send data to the stock speedo.

Send in to my dealer to get the Master Cylinder Gauge removed and the fuel gauge on the stock speedo no longer works, constantly showing low range.

When the dealer consulted moco, the response was the Master Cylinder Gauge needs to be installed. We did that and it works fine now. The fuel gauge on the stock speedo & Master Cylinder Gauge both works.

I don't get the sense of it as well and that's y I guess the dealers themselves are stumped.

oh to add on, the stock speedo is also now able to indicate the range you can travel with the amount of fuel left in the tank... not exactly accurate but over time when u understand how it works, u kind of know what it meant when it says something else lol
