As already mentioned, we have Stickies, in the Tech Electrical section, on how to check your charging system. That includes advice on checking your battery. There are Stickies so we don't have to rewrite the same advice every time someone comes asking! Please go read those Stickies and follow the advice in them. Then let us know what you find, so we can help you make progress and sort things out.

We are assuming that you have checked the ground to the engine, yes?
The trickle charger will top off the battery if its good and show you a bad which it looks like but when these intermittent issues come up you need to check fuse connections, corrosion etc, yes?

Keep us apprised and good luck,

.

Thanks for the graph. Was about 50 degrees so it looks like I'm about 50%.

Pretty sure she'll fire tomorrow after trickling, for at least long enough to get a running voltage reading.

David,
Yes, negative ground was fine. At the battery and the block. So far fuses seem to be good and corrosion free,...at first look.

grbrown,
I did read the sticky previously. Printed it out and brought it home along with some other print outs. But whoever wrote it should be fired because it did not make me a charging system expert.

Thanks again all. Will update ASAP.

Got some new data I need help figuring out if you please...

Let battery trickle charge for 2 days now.

Voltage check bike not running = 13.4 Ok,...sounds better than other day when it was mid 12's.
Ignition on = 12.25, then Run on = 12.0 Same as other day
On startup drops to just under 9.
Once idle slowed down it settled about 14.0.
Under medium throttle drops to 13.5.

I shut bike down, waited about 10 min and checked battery with bike totally off and reading only 12.5V.

Now that I was able to get it running I was able to do the AC output for stator test. Showing 25V at idle (which is where is should be) BUT the voltage does NOT increase under throttle. What's that mean?

Few extra things to know:
- When doing the stator resistance test, I only get resistance when I go negative to positive. I thought I was supposed to get resistance either way?
- When doing the stator ground check I get a 0.00 reading when reading the negative stator terminal (which is good). When I try to read the positive stator terminal I get no reading (meter screen goes blank).

Can't figure out if I have a stator, regulator or battery problem? Or maybe a combo?

Read post #11 and those Stickies again!

Have you had your battery load tested?
Revving the engine you should be able to read around 14.5 volts at the battery.

There are several tests which will help you diagnose the problem, if it lies in your charging system.

From the sticky -
"if the stator is NOT shorted to ground, and the stator is putting out A/C voltage"

The sticky does not talk about the nuance issue I seem to be having with these tests. Are you reading my post or are you just busting my baby makers?

We can help you a lot more if you adopt a systematic approach to this. So have you had your battery load tested and measured voltage as above? The charging system can play tricks, which is why those Stickies were so carefully written.

An alternative is to find yourself a local indy and ask him to check your bike over.

I have your stickies, manuals and lots of other posts on the topic and I'm still having trouble.

I'm fine if you don't want to help. Simply feel free to not participate in my threads and save us both time. Have a good day.

In addition to it looking like you have a bad battery, it also looks like you have a stator problem. The voltage should climb to 60+ with a moderate twist of the throttle.
