Default 883 conversion to 1250 question

If converting a 1996 883 sportster to a 1250 using S&S pistons cylinders and cams. What Buell heads would be the right fit? Meaning Buell model and year range?

Or if we just convert it to a 1200 and use 1200 heads what sporty year ranges of 1200 sportster head can be used? I checked on the S&S site and they only had a full hooligan kit for 2000-2016 sportster available that included pistons cylinders lifters cams gaskets and springs and a few other details minus heads. Claimed 84.33hp and 77.71 ft lbs of torque with a high flow aircleaner. My friend already has a full exhaust and high flow air cleaner. And if we went with the 1250 kit and used 1200 heads claimed power is 86.47hp and 81.87 ft lbs torque. Not sure if extra 2hp and almost 4 extra lbs of torque will real for my friend is a big deal. She just want to bump up from her 883 to something stronger on her sporty

There are 1250/1275 kits available that can be used with your stock 883 heads. I certainly wouldn't buy other heads, new or secondhand! Hammer Performance is popular in here and you will find plenty of info about them. They sell kits and also offer high performance cams plus head porting, everything a chap could want!

The stock heads should be fine, and I would suggest just using some basic conversion pistons/jugs. That'll get you a nice boost from an 883, and be a little stronger than a stock 1200 for far less money. The S&S kit is nice, but way overpriced in my opinion.

Most of the power from heads is in the upper half of the RPM range as well, so unless she likes to wring it out she won't likely notice the difference or justify the cost.

As Scuba points out, this is much simpler than you seem to want to make it! Stick with a 1250/1275 kit and stock 883 heads. Add a decent exhaust, tune the carb and your friend will be happy as can be. I suspect you'll be impressed too!

Spend some time studying Hammers website and point your friend there as well. I love S&S stuff and have an engine in my Glide, but if and when I pep up my Sporty it will be with a Hammer kit.
