Need a HD Dictionary
I have ridden bikes for 50 years and only recently (2 weeks ago) ridden my first Harley. I am now the proud owner of a 2009 HD 883 Sportster Low. So far, a great ride and I love it. I have been lurking on this forum all winter and I have found the nicknames, abbreviations quite confusing.
When I was a young lad I discovered that a 1200 cc Harley Davidson was indeed a "Harley '74"!!! 1200cc = 74 ci. I was so pleased with myself for figuring this out. That would mean my 883 is a 54? I do not see any of these on the forum. I do see 48's but I have no idea what that's about. Then there is panhead, ironhead knuclehead, flathead, ******** etc. I have a vague idea of the different engine designs and the possible way that the nicknames were derived. I have no idea of which models the names apply to. I have heard of 883 iron. I would assume that there are aluminum jugs out there someplace, never heard of a 883 al.
Other than spending my waining years reading several forums where do I get all of this info? Is there a dictionary or thesarus out there?
Maybe try something like that??????
Has pictues too!
Yes an 883 does equal about 54ci. 48s and 72s don't equal engine size but try to approximate an era, stylistically.
You could start here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harley-Davidson
I have several HD books time to read I am a little short on. I will take a look at the book recommended and I will check out the link when I get home.
I appreciate the prompt answers!
