And as far as importing one from the states; thanks to our government on a purely pound-for-pound or bang-for-buck scale it doesn't make MUCH of a difference (unless I have been looking in completely the wrong place).

I don't know how such things are handled in Australia, but in the US, there are companies that sell vehicles (including motorcycles) which have become the property of insurance companies after said company has paid a total loss claim. In the US, such a company would be Copart. There might be an equivalent in Australia.

My experience has been that, in most "total loss" accidents, the engine goes relatively unscathed. Most damage is usually born by the forks and/or frame.
