I have a 2001 Custom. About a month back I would run into periods where the bike would shudder badly. It seems to happen whether under power and riding or just idling in neutral, although it's much more noticeable while riding. It comes and goes though. Yesterday I ran 50 miles without any issues. Today, it started 2 minutes into a 10 minute ride home from work. Here's what I've done recently both to troubleshoot the issue as well as just some coincidental project work:
New bars, cables, hoses
New Energy One clutch (clutch and primary chain adjusted obviously)
Fresh fluids
Checked torque on all motor mounts
Checked drive belt tension
New spark plugs
I'm having difficulty determining if this is something in the engine, primary, or if it's just running really poorly.
Any suggestions or common problems that come to mind would be appreciated.
What do you mean by shuddering? Is it a motor thing, is it a rattling thing, a steering thing?
I'm assuming it comes from the motor, but I'm not entirely sure. It is very noticeable when under load, but diminishes when sitting in neutral. Not steering related because it continues when you stop.
The best I can describe it is it feels like I'm riding on very rough or grooved pavement or if you've ridden a solid mount Sporty, it feels like the normal vibration time 5. It is very noticeable only because it comes and goes.
Aside from the very rough vibration, to me everything sounds normal.
When is it happening? Low speed/low rpm cruising? Under hard throttle? When letting clutch out from a stop? etc etc...
When it is happening, it happens any time the engine is running, but it comes and goes.
I decided to ride to work again thinking maybe it could be heat related because it was cool over the weekend but hot yesterday. It was cool this morning, but the bike was vibrating/shuddering from the start.
I think you could have convinced me that this was normal vibration from a solid mount sporty if it didn't come and go.

I could be wrong but it almost sounds like something is loose and adding to the vibration. Try to put your hand on **** like the headlight, tank, etc...while riding and see if it stops. I just had this happen the other day....I pulled my tank off to fix a leak and the bolt must have loosened after a few days of riding. It was vibin' bad. Something to look around for before spending money on replacing parts. Mine was the same, almost unnoticeable at idle.

Thanks. That's the assumption I've been operating under. I'll try again when I get home to isolate something that seems loose.
Additionally, I'm going to pull my new plugs and see if anything looks wonky from the combustion side of things. The old ones just looked old, so I didn't give them much thought when I tossed 'em.
