The manual says the light is supposed to come on with .8 gallons left...but I've noticed mine is coming on with 1 to 1.1 gallons left. I'm also getting around 51 mpg on my XL883.
Fuel light? Wow! I don't have one of those. I just watch my trip odometer. I know I get better than 40 mpg. I usaully get 45 to 50 mpg, however, for a cushion I use 40. With that in mind I know I need fuel at 120 miles. In a lonmg trip I start looking at 100 miles. I start worring at 115 miles. At 120 miles I remind myself that the equation is on the low side and hold my breath.
I personaly think having the light come on when you still have a 1/3 of fuel left is not really the ideal time for it. I would think maybe a half gallon or so would be prefurred, for me anyway.
40 miles or so left in your tank leaves a lot of room for change in driving enviroment.
I havn't driving my bike to see how far I can go roughly on my bike so I can go by millage. I always have my girlfriend on the back, and she always like "No, I don't want to run out of gas. I love you. Please get gas".
I have an '07 1200C and the light comes on when there's still 2 gallons in the tank. The light also comes on early if I'm going up and down hill a lot. The light's a nice reminder that I need to think about gas, but I go by the milage to decide when to stop...
I have a 2007 883C. Last night I went out for a ride and when I started up the low fuel light came on. I filled up and it only took 2.3 gallons. However, I have a 4.5 gallon tank. My fuel light is coming on at 2.2 gallons left. Hmmmm.
Just thought I'd throw this infor the people saying around 2 gal. left. When you fill up, do you fill up with the bike leaning on the stand or do you sit on it and keep it upright and then truly top off? Inoticed my fuel light coming on early the first week I owned it and scratching my head as to why the fuel light wascoming on when I could only get 2.4 or so gallons back into it (4.5 gal. tank). The reason I could only get that much in is I was not truly filling it all the way. After topping it off I found the light to be accurate.
Anyways, could be something you guys/gals already do, I'm a newbie so what I am mentioning could be something that you guys are saying "no duh" about.
