Default Hello and some Help please

Hey all, my name is Josh. I'm from a little small town in Vermont. Thanks for letting me join. Also I am having some trouble with my Harley. It's a 1993 sportster 883 deluxe, I have changed the coil, drain the gas, put new fresh gas in it, new plugs, and I'm still having the same issue. I start driving for about 10 minutes it fine then it start to sputter and backfire/pop. It's starting to get on my nerves. I need help please!!!

Has your carb been rebuilt? Perhaps a vacuum leak as the engine warms up. I'd recommend changing the intake manifold seals at the heads, the carb to manifold seal, rebuild carb, changing any vacuum lines, if you have a vacuum petcock check that. Your ignition is not the nosecone type, so it is likely not the issue. Check any connections involved, the ignition module under the triangle cover, and the battery cable ends for corrosion. I have a 1991 which is almost identical.

Or, small town syndrome, your bike doesn't like to leave town.

Yeah, it sounds like an intake problem. Before tearing everything apart, I'd drain the gas and put at least 91 or 92 octane in and see if that makes a difference - unless that's what you've already got in it.

Welcome to the forum Josh
What you are describing is the Ignition Module has gone bad and is typical of H-D after many years
The Ultima # 53-644 on ebay $125 is the best way to go one simple unit that goes in cam sensor housing . Everything of H-D ( 2 pieces ) goes in trash

When you go to install it mark the "V" notch very good and install the new one in the same exact place , engine will fire up and run great and timing should be correct but does need to be checked with a light

MARK THE " V " NOTCH

I believe his ignition module is behind the triangle cover just aft of the battery, not down in the timing nosecone like later models. I have not heard of those type of modules failing due to heat like the nosecone models.

If he does have nosecone ignition, I agree with you 100%.

Still should have the cam sensor pickup under the nose cone. Those hall effect sensors can age poorly and fail with the heat. Very likely to be the ignition unit since he already replaced a coil.

Before you replace it OP, start it up cold and take a hair dryer and heat up the module. If it starts sputtering and missing like before then you have your fault.

I too would start with checking for intake manifold vacuum leaks (which is a very common problem). This can often be done by spraying/squirting water around the intake boots, manifold, and manifold to head gasket area with the eng. at a steady idle (any rpm change will, of course, indicate a vacuum leak).

Then, if the above checks out OK, I'd follow the 81rat, J Harper, and Scub's advice.

Meanwhile, welcome to the forum.

I agree with John Harper. Start with the simpler, basic things like the vacumn leaks, lines, etc...

How long have you owned the bike? Is this a problem that you've had since you bought it, or did it just begin?

Welcome to the forum BTW, and a '93 is a great year for Sporties.

So I've have he bike for 3 years. I bought it in 2015 from a friend. She didn't ride it much. It has had this issue sense I bought it. I didn't ride at all last year because I didn't have time to work on it. Now that I do I just can't figure it out. Don't wanna spend the $$ at a Harley shop to do it. It runs great for like 10-15 minutes then it starts sputtering and popping/back firing. It's embarrassing to drive when it does this.

Well, I've got a '93 1200 so I can help in terms of giving you information about your model. The FSM covers both the 93-94 - 883 and 1200 models. But I would suggest you get an FSM of your own.

I do have an S&S Super E carb and have no experience with the stodk CV carbs but the principles are the same.

It sounds like you haven't ridden it much because if I had a bike that was doing that, I'd have torn into it in the first few weeks.

Having said that, it sounds like a fuel issue.

When you say "popping/back firing" what do you mean? Are you getting a lot of burping (carb) or farting (exhaust) pops? Is there a lot of popping on deceleration? Or is it during acceleration?

When you are riding it with an neutral throttle (just cruising) how does it act?
