Default Max Handlebar Height

Hello all. I am a taller rider and should have upgraded to a bigger bike, but i am stuck for awhile. I am considering changing out the stock bars of my 2016 883. My question is, how high can I go before I have to start thinking about extending cables and wires?

Thanks in advance.

Depends on the bars but I'd plan on a cable kit. You won't get far without it.

Im not looking to add apes to it. I was thinking more like a 4 or 5 inch z bar.

Most stock bikes can be raised at least 1.5" without needing to replace cables, brake lines & wiring...HOWEVER some can go higher. Check how much slack you have.

Another option to getting new handlebars, is to look at some Handlebar Riser Extension. This is a solution that works for many.

Like I said, you won't get far. Loosen your riser bolts and pull up. That'll tell ya how much slack you have. I think the brake line is the shortest.

I just installed 10 in mini apes on my 1200c and only changed my brake line in favor of a +4 in braided line along with extended my wires 9inches (I internally wired the bars) I’m loving the feel of the bike so much more now. The clutch and throttle cables are stock.

A cheap and easy way to test it is to get some all thread 5/16-18(I think) and a package of nuts. Adjust them to as high as you feel comfortable, then see what cables won't reach, or bind with lock to lock movement. To know the proper length of cables to replace, use some spare "coax" cable if you have it. It would have a similar stiffness to clutch cable. I think you will find the clutch cable to be your limiting factor as choices are limited by the actual "cable pull", not the outer sheathing length. Aftermarket brake lines are pretty much sold by the inch, and custom length wire is a non-issue.

On the stock risers or lower risers?

Nope I got a darn good deal on a sporty low mount with the 1.5in pullback risers. I guess that wasn’t all that I had changed.

You should be ok without needing to change anything.

I went with 10" mini apes And 3" Riser Extensions on my Sporty. I used the stock clutch cable, all the stock wiring (there's a fair amount of extra wire length below the tank) and only had to get a longer front brake line.
